Travels of the Artful Bodger.
« on: June 20, 2009, 04:39:54 PM »
Even though the Artful Bodger and his friend are travelling on "The Mainland" that does not mean all workshop related activities come to a halt.  Yesterday we were in the world's most southern city, Invercargill where I spied a nice hefty vertical slide in a shop display case, it is new but they have had it for some time,  Chinese manufacture I imagine, I just hope it is not too big for my lathe!  I also found a shop selling 'used-but-good' stuff in Timaru but having read somewhere that reamers are easily damaged I bypassed the box of them that were all rattling around together but I did find a 7/8" drill that will be useful and a 3-to-2 Morse taper sleeve.

Here is a picture from the travels...

About three and a half thousand sheep on the road near Lake Monowai, the complete flock is about seven thousand.

Stew, it is not difficult to get a reasonably accurate count of even a large number of sheep in such a situation,  just position youself until they are passing you about ten abreast then count the ones that pass by you, this is the technique used by many farmers to count sheep as they run through a gate and is suprisingly accurate due I presume to compensating errors.  In this instance I took the easy way and just asked the man driving the ute which in the picture is still way out of sight!

John,
I was told by my father to count the legs and divide by four.  Was that wrong? ::)

Dave, with some of the shearers they have nowadays you would probably undercount! :ddb:
