Dave,

I've never sucessfully reamed anything either. Like you say, have tried both ways, leaving very little material and making it work much harder and can't get either right. Not sure whether it's speed, feed, lubrication or what.

Nick,

It's all three of those factors that you mention.

I usally manualy feed the reamer. So can't give you a feed rate. Speed should be slower than drilling and it also depends on the dia. of the reamer. I have noticed that lube plays a larger part in the finish you get. I've tried plain motor oil, "tap magic" (TM), motor oil and kerosene mixed. It also depends on the material that you are reaming.

Were I used to work we would leave about .010" to .015" (.25mm to .38mm) of stock on before reaming.

I use Rocol RTD on mine, it's a fairly well known stuff for tapping & cutting. Certainly makes a difference screwing stainless, ( usually EN58, your '303 I think, not sure ).

But were you using machine reamers ? I have a 1/4" with straight flutes, this seems to be OK. I get on OK with FCMS ( Free Cutting Mild Steel ), but with brass or especially ally I get score marks or chatter marks, even with the same reamer. The reamers are mostly Intal or Dormer, so they aren't Asian tools, nor are they worn, some are as new. I usually ream at about 300 rpm, feed, I guess, at about 1" per 2 secs.

I have been using a lathe since 1971, always had problems with brass & ally. I've just about given up. I can't ream. I need to live with it.

I use straight flutes also.

Think we need a seperate post for this. Sounds like a few people are haveing trouble reaming. Maybe we can come up with an answer.

I've used an adjustable machine one, little screw up front, used it quite a bit to make bronze bearings for record players quite successfully..
You will find it a distinct help… if you know and look as if you know what you are doing. (IRS training manual)

Hi Folks

Many thanks for the kind words. It will get a base sometime I think.

Bit off it at the moment. Rheumatoid Arthritis in my right arm / hand.

Wretched paw looks like a blown up Marigold .. swollen knuckles etc.

Somewhat restricted, just have to wait until it sods off, as usual ..  :(
