Thanks gents, now a bit more to keep you entertained.

I just couldn't stand the sight of that square bit on the back of the cylinder, it looked absolutely grotesque.

So after the standard Friday English lunch, fish, chips & mushy peas, with loads of salt and vinegar, anyone drooling yet? I got stuck into it in the shop.

First there was a hole drilled into the brass base, this will be threaded, and used to fix it to the acrylic one.

Now came the bit I had been waiting for, rough machining away the metal that isn't needed. Once that is done, the files then come out, to get it all roughly to shape.

This shot shows how you can cut a lot of the material away, as long as you don't touch any of the basic engine dimensions, you can make it whatever shape you want.

As you can now see from this shot, all that boxy square bit has now gone, and it is starting to look like a flowing shape. There is still hours of hand work to do on this part yet, every scratch and blemish has to be laboriously removed before final polish.

Time to knock some acrylic into shape. I have decided to go with a basic diamond pattern. The round faced flycutter left a finish that will take only seconds to buff up.

Just to break up the stark straight edges, I decided to put a recess either side.

That's it! All the parts are made and shaped to how I think it should look, and it is still very much like my original sketch.

So now I have a few hours, sitting on a chair, wearing my fingers away.
The next time you see this effort, it should be all finished and running.

Is anyone starting to get the bling bug yet? Making your engines look just that little bit different.
Make the basic engine, then hack it to bits to make it look unique.

I'll have to try the whole "hacking away of anything not structurally vital" thing.

Tim,

It is the easiest way to get a standard plan engine to look like it isn't.

Bogs,

You got me going on building one.

I'm just at the "make it look different' stage". I need to make a few more before the "bling bug" bites. Still to impatient for the bling factor.

Yours is looking nice. Must have been that Friday lunch you had.

It was in fact just down to the final bit of polishing this evening, and my fingers gave way on the buffing wheel.

Because it had had so much silver soldering done on it, the metal was very soft and so suffered a fair amount of impact damage.

The upright part of the stand was bent like a banana, a couple of the fins had bad flats on them, and they were also knocked out of shape.

So a rescue package was brought into action and hammers, small dollies, wedges and other bits and bobs were used. It looks a 1000% better than it did, but not 100% to what it should be.

You will see the results in the morning.

Looks pretty darn good from here Bogs

I figure you have tried out the special plastic polishing stuff then?  Very nice base shape/look

John H,

I don't know what's worse, the fact that you bent your blingdicator or that you own a cute-ometer??

So.... It has to be said Bogs.......... Where's the video?  :D (no real rush..... I'm off out into the shop for a bit   :dremel: )

Ralph.

P.S.  I wouldn't put your fingers near that flywheel... It looks like it might bite!!  :)

Wow Bogs,

Nice looking engine. I think you've earned the name "Bling King" on this one.

Really like the redesign you made on it. Looks like it should belong in a spaceship to drive a generator or something.

Ralph, in my opinion, that plastic kit is worth it's weight in gold. No overheating or melting, just did a great job in a couple of minutes. The only problem with it is that I am covered from head to toe in a fine lint. The mop is a marvel of mop engineering, if there is such a thing.

I do have a few more fancy pics, but I think you would all like to see whether it runs or not. Sorry about the bad quality and lack of close ups, my camera won't zoom when doing videos.

Now happy Bogs

That's a good little runner for September

I'll have to have a closer look when I next get chance to visit...... Don't go and fumble it now will you?!  :)

Halo next?   :poke:
Sorry john, but you have a (self imposed) deadline

I do like the look of that base..... More to spend in the near future  ::) I think I'll require a marvel of mop engineering myself   :dremel:

Very nice work sir

You weren't gone long Ralph.

If you want to try a few acrylic bases, the chap that gets it for me will be at the Malpas show. I might be able to persuade him to give me a few cwts of the stuff, like he did with the large acrylic sheets I showed you.

Not quite Halo time yet, I still have to finish off that small engine refurb job, a couple of days if I am lucky.

I dropped everything to make this one, an urge to bling came over me all of a sudden.

Bogs.

BTW, a normal one, I reckon is a max of 5 hours to make, not the 5 days it has taken me to get this one done.

Hi John

Thats a wonderful little engine, very unique, very nicely made, and I've certainly learnt a lot about blinging something up.

Stew,

It is only the same as the two you made, just I went a bit cutter and buffer happy.

Another one for the 'top shelf'

Nope not long at all.... In fact I didn't make it !!

My printer ran out of ink and then my puter went kerput!  :bang:

All back on track now..... I'm light £69:00 for the ink  :jaw: But I needed it you see! Talk about getting you over a barrel (with ya pants down!!!!)

Anyhow.... Puters back up and printer just printed.....

Acrylic bits.....Yes please try if you can. I think I could find a use for them   I'll need them there mops and polish then too.... (Perhaps a birthday gift to myself.... It'll be here before I know it! )

Now I'm off out to the shop!  ::)
