For all of you thinking of building beam engines and such, I noticed yesterday the RDG have some 7" ones in stock at a very low price. I don't know what the quality is like, but at about 1/2 the normal cost I ordered a couple for stock. I don't know how many they have, but at that price, it would be prudent that if you did desire one or two, don't hang around.

Go down a couple of items on here and you will find them

Even though no one has raved over them, I thought I would give you a looksee, just to let you know what they are like.

As you can see, I have got my gorilla hands on them, and they are rather larger than what I usually use.
The quality looks very good indeed, all casting joints are well lined up, and no obvious inclusions showing on the surface.
Very little hand dressing will be required to get them looking good.

I just couldn't wait to get cutter into metal, so I did a rough chuck up and skimmed an outside face.
The hard outer skin is, I would say, a max of 0.005" (0.12mm) thick, and a 0.010" (0.25mm) cut took it off and cleaned the face up very nicely.
A very nice, easy to machine, close grained casting.

I am very happy indeed with my purchase. I class them as a real bargain.

So now I will have to go thru all my plans, to find an engine I can build to use them on.

I was sorely tempted John.......

But, I hesitated, cos 7" dia might be a bit big, for my machinery etc.....

Seeing your pics, now, I`m sure I was right. I really don`t want to add more to my stack of "might come ins".....  ::)

They really do look beautiful though........  :D

Thanks lads.

I have a bit of a fetish for ball bearings and flywheels, I collect them like a dog collects fleas. I don't know why, just one of those little mysteries of life.

I WILL use them eventually, and when I worked out how much a blank of material would cost me, to machine myself, it came out a lot more than what these cost me. So no arguments really.

As I said Darren, a fetish.

You can't have enough ball bearings in this life.

But truthfully, I use them in all sorts of places for reducing friction or making valves etc.

John, they certainly do look a bargain, and I have always wanted to make a nice beam engine - however, I need to stem my  :proj:
