Ok here's the pics

For you chaps who don't know the lake district is a national park in the north west of the UK in the county of Cumbira the lakes were formed in the last ice age you can see the U shape valleys. Its where Donald Cambell broke the water speed record in his jet powered boat Bluebird and also where he met his end when it summersalted on his last attempt to beat the record.

All the pics are of one of the lakes called Ulswater its 11 miles long we walked the length of the lake and got the steam boat back (the boats been converted to desile so why call it a steamer )

Isn't retirement great  :D :D :D :D :D

Enjoy

A bit flat and boring isnt it lads? I worked here for a few years:

One of those little hills is 5500' above water and about 6000 below!  Great place for fishing!  Plenty of rain too, up to 300" per annum, that about 25 feet of rain or 8 metres, the airport is closed about 2 or 3 days out of 5.

Judging by the fact that no-one has made any mention of the url, it was apparently sadly in need of hi-jacking

No pics of the BNFL Glowbug Factory then ?

Used to go there when they were building the Thorpe thingy ..

EDIT

Oops, sorry, you have had a go. ::)
Did you fiddle it to the point where it oscillated quite tamely for a minute or so, the goes into somersaults, then back to previous state?

Yes Stew, that is Milford Sound, in Fiordland National Park down the south west corner of the country, the rest of the country with the exception of some areas of very flat (Canterbury Planes for example) is really much like those pictures of the Lake Country although where not farmed it is often forrested both NZ native species and imported 'weeds' like Monterey Pine and their relatives.

If you have any 'second cousins' here they will be well asimilated and should you meet them you will need to write notes to understand each other!

There were a few NZ soldiers killed in Korea, I do not recall how many.

How many in your planned tour party?  If it is just one or two couples I suggest looking at a rental car and motels, it is what we do when we travel around NZ (not a rental car though).  The rental camper van people try hard to get you into their vehicles but they must be a pain to drive and park etc and the motel is barely more expensive.

Thanks for the information John, are there lots of Motels you can drop on, as in the US or do you have to plan ahead a bit more.

We're thinking of hiring a car and drifting around thats what we've done on visits to US, Canada and Australia, when we've been to South America:- Ecuadore and Chile, we had guides that did the driving for us. Our daughter works for a travel company that specializes on arranging adventure type holidays, she does all the planning and booking for us at very cheap rates otherwise we couldn't do it. If any one wants a special holiday planning I'll give you her email address:- plug plug plug

One place we'd like to visit is Stewart Island off south island I understand its got spectacular wild life.

I'm getting all excited at the prospect.

Stew, when there is only two of us we do not bother to book ahead but last year we had four visitors from Europe so with them I took my laptop and logged on each evening to find a place for the next day that would accommodate all of us. It would be wise to book for holiday weekends etc.  In any case you can do all the bookings as you go along and there is no need to shell out money to any agency or whatever.

A typical motel of the chearpest average type has a single and a double bed in one room plus a bit of a table, TV etc and always at least enough to make tea and toast, most, especially if they are a few years older, will have a full floor standing cooker, sink binch and refrigerator.

Hi All

Interesting stuff, appeals to me for some reason.

There are loads of nutters making stuff like that. I've had quite an interest in such things for donkey's years.

I got the site about 2 months ago, 'cos a mate wanted to make something simple & harmless for his 5 yr old niece.
So I suggested a compound pendulum harmonograph, lots of them on the net. Have a shufti. He says 'what's that?' I trawled the net to find him a set of plans/sketch, and, as is usual, I went wandering about, and came across the 'chaotic' bit.

A lot of these 'toys' are quick and easy to make, cost pretty much nowt, and often amuse kids far longer than some 100 quid electronic gizmo.

In ancient times there was often a project something along those lines for kids Christmas presents in ME mag.
Probably because there was not a lot of spare cash in the '50's, could be we're back there ?

This is an exotic version of a C.P.H, took me a bit to find it. I think it uses epicyclic gears, not too sure, but there are others, very simply made using pendulums. Look at the gallery.

Dave, I`ve been looking at the harmonographs but they look a little big and the vast majority are made from wood. I know the one you show is not but again, looks quite big. Is there any way of attatching a drawing instruments to the double pendulum I wonder? I`m very interested, something like this would sit well in my classroom!

Stew,

That reminded me of a spirograph thing too. Also, I used to have something that copied what you were drawing, I'm sure you could configure levers to give half or double scale.

Dave BC,

Funnily enough I was going to post this:

It is called a pantograph, and can be obtained from most good stationers and drawing suppliers. Or off car boot sales for a quid or so.

It is a shame, because I gave a couple away early this year to a model boater who was scaling up some plans. I might have a couple left in my back room, I just don't know what is in there at this moment in time.

This is more like a 'traditional' build.

Fairly easy.

http://physics.kenyon.edu/EarlyApparatus/Oscillations_and_Waves/Harmonographs/Harmonographs.html

In about 1974, I did some bits for a Teacher who lurked in the local pub. He did the wood bits, I made some of the metalwork, gimbals etc.
Worked fine. If you want any more info. just ask ..

Ahh I see, this link helped: http://www.fxmtech.com/harmonog.html

So harmonographs and pintographs are both drawing machines, your inital video was a pintograph - two rotating disks, the harmonographs are the pendulum type machines.

I`m going to look into this in more detail. I bet the kids would love this and it would get some good use at science club.

I knew you'd find a site ....  :D I had every confidence in you  :D

This is from your link

http://www.karlsims.com/harmonograph/

We made one end 'swingable' in both directions, ie, a 'sperical' bearing, so you can do it with 2 pendulums.
Weights were 2 litre plastic bottles filled with wet soft builders sand, circa 4-5kg, the pen arm hinge was one of the 'polypropylene?' aileron hinges used on model aircraft.

Try an adapter to put more then one pen on, in different colours. Cute patterns.
I seem to remember spending a somewhat sozzled Saturday afternoon in Steve's garage, playing with the thing when it was up and running.

I never really grew up

Bluechip - The bike is a WLC 45 bitsa, most of it 1942, 70s Triumph front end and a few later bits & pieces. Some pics & details here.

Re:Harmonographs, I made one once but they take up a lot of room.
If anyone wants to make a fancy drawing machine, one of these has a much smaller footprint

Really nice bike. Always admired folk who get an assortment of bits, and make a unique bike. Not easy, I think.

Make the geometric chuck yourself ?
I seem to remember a rather OTT (22 stage ?) device on the cover of ME a long time ago, when it was in the small format. '50's ?

Nice to see one ..

Bluechip - I made the chuck some years ago (seemed like a good idea at the time!) terrible time waster, you can spend hours just playing with to see what happens when you move one or other adjustment. Some details of it's construction here.
The chuck you mentioned was on the cover of ME Vol. 103 (1950)

It was a 7 part chuck built by Mr Tweddell.
It's a bitsa (like by bike!) built from a combination of Hartley/Plant & Ibbetson type mechanisms.

That's quite an achievment, it was a good idea. I doubt if many experienced model engineers would tackle one of those. Not me, that's for sure. Yup, that is the one from ME I was thinking of. So where did I get the 22 bit from ?  ::)

As for time wasting, so what? Looking back over my life so far, a good bit of it could be described by some as 'time wasting'. But it's my time, and I've enjoyed what I do.

I expect you're the same   :D
