Please tell me about dividing heads, indexing plates etc?

What is the important characteristics of these devices?  I know nothing about such things and I am wondering if making one or the other would be a worthwhile project?

What would each be used for?

I think a dividing head has an indexing plate on it and you can change them out for different schemes.
