I want a bigger hole
« on: October 22, 2009, 10:03:42 AM »
Hi Troops

This is a pic. of my 4" 4-Jaw SC Chuck.

The hole in the centre is some 22.5mm.

Is there any reason not to bore this out to 26mm? There seems to be plenty of meat on it.
The alternative is to buy a 5" 4J SC etc. chuck.
It's marked 5000 rpm. I never use it above 1800.
Any suggestions entirely at my own risk ..

Dave,

If you take the dust cover at the back of the chuck, it is usually a plastic one on these later ones, and have a look where the scoll drive gears are.

If everything is well clear of the hole, reassemble, and put the inside jaws on and put on a large ring to tighten up against. That will open up the jaws, and at the same time lock up the scroll. Then gently open it up.

If it throws the jaws off being tight whilst cutting, and then you will need to disassemble the chuck and bore the scroll and main body seperately.

Thanks for the reply. According to the spec. for the chuck, the bore is 23mm.

I will dis-assemble it, and have a shufti. It's overdue for a clean anyway.

Dunnit  :D

Taken it out to a shade under 27mm. Just kisses the end of the scroll gear locating holes.

Can now get 3/4" square bar in about 2", instead of having it perched on the jaw ends.

Will still get a 5" though. Why not? Apparently I can't take it with me!

As an aside, I see Rotagrip have a "BISON" 5". Anyone had Bison stuff from Rotagrip ??

Not had Bison stuff Dave, but I've used Rotagrip and found them helpful and fair to deal with. IIRC I bought a set of parallels and a hunk of granite (surface block), their delivery charges on the granite were the best by far.

Dave,
I actually rang them rather than ordered off the web (can't for the life of me remember why though   ::)  ) .............. anyway they were very helpful.  Might be worth a call and a natter.

Just a tip on granite.  :offtopic: The counter top makers have a lot of waste granite laying around and are happy to get rid of it. I picked up three large pieces of sink cutouts to use as surface blocks for sharpening chisels and plane blades.

Was going to do that anyway. It seems to be a common habit ( in UK anyway) that suppliers have items on their ordering sites, but nil stock. Barstewards!!

So, I'll call them and see if they've got physical chucks rather than virtual chucks.
Need to see how they despatch the stuff, as we seem to be a bit deficient in the Royal Mail department at the mo.

Dave,

I have the opposite experience with Rotagrip. They really ripped me off at one time over postal charges, charged me for overnight delivery and the item didn't turn up for about 5 days, they had sent it by snail mail. When I complained they said it was nothing to do with them, and wouldn't give me a refund, so I refused to have anything else to do with them.

I hope you have better dealings.

Aaargh. Now I'm confused   ::)  ::)

Just had a look where they are, not far from an old workmate. Often said I'd look him up one day. He can't drive anymore 'cos his eyesight has failed.
We have the odd natter on the phone, I wonder if he's still got his Rudge?, must make him a sharp offer if he can't ride it now ...

 :offtopic: but ...
Why are some UK suppliers such a bunch of a***holes. You would think in a recessionary time they would get a grip. Alas, no !!
I've got two angle plates on order from Warco since Oct 6. Not here yet. Managed to charge my Credit Card OK though. Suppose an interest free loan from a ( now probably 'ex' ) customer cheaper than going for a Bank Loan
