Big shop changes in the longer term...

My Garage is about that size, kept it small to stay away from planning issues/regulations. Not that I've built it sub standard, it's just when you go much bigger the authorities get involved and the cost (their costs) skyrocket.

Given the choice I would have built it half the size again.

eg, with machines down each side you can just squeeze my car in, well until the new lathe that is.

A touch wider would have made the world of difference. Say 5 or 6m and 8m long.

I dont intend to park the car in mine Darren, there will be a double garage for that as I am hoping my wife and I will both be able to drive for a decade or more yet.  I do have a motor cycle to accommodate and I hope there is room for a safe welding area.

I don't park in mine John, but I do like to work out of the rain when needed.

If you are to have a double garage as well then your size should be fine ..... consider yourself spoilt

Yes Darren, I really am spoilt!

My 'best' machines are right now at the back of the garage I use and I do not like it too much as I think parking hot, wet vehicles releases a lot of moisture into the air which I am sure is not good for my Sally Shaper or the un-named lathe.

I think we will be having a new house built which means I get to choose the size of my 'shop.   After initial dreams of a huge barn I have decided that big just means a bigger mess and that I should be content with a size that will always be tidy,  6 x 4 metres would seem adequate.  Any thoughts on this?

Yup. Here's the begining of my shop.

It sits on six acers of land and this was back in 1997. Now see what happened after 12 years of "stuff" following me home. We're looking at about 2300 square foot basement.











I should have built only a small shop. Also that length of time I decided I didn't want to fill all that space with a model railroad. So be careful when wanting a bigger space because your right, it's a bigger mess and much harder to clean up.

I built a 24' X 30' shop and, if I had it to do over, it would be 40' X 60' and two stories.

Yeah, your right so much fun untill you can't find that tool you just laid down and spend hours looking for it only to find you left it right were you last used it.

Progress on the eventual move is a bit slow.  We have concluded that a new house will be required as the available old ones all leave something to be desired.

Of course a new house also means a new 'shop and this is what I am looking at right now...

  One of the side bays will be the workshop and there will be a mezzanine in the centre bay  for the Lego trains.  They are steel frame kitsets  7 x 11 metres overall.

The shop space will be snug, about 3.5 x 7 metres but it will open into the adjacent garage space if I am working on a vehicle or building some incredible machine!
