Keeping thin parallels where you want them
« on: November 22, 2009, 10:37:27 AM »
I picked this up from John on one of my visits

When you need to work close up to the jaws of your vice the parallels can get in the way, so you use thin parallels but these can be a pain to keep in place, so simply slip a coil spring between the parallels to keep then up against the jaws:- like this

Cheers

Nice idea passed on, Stew!

I`ve no handy springs..... So I use a piece of steel banding, bent into a U shape......

Still drilling holes... Sometimes, in the right place!

Still modifying bits of metal... Occasionally, making an improvement!

Same here. Plus, the steel banding itself makes nice thin parallels.  :dremel:

Its the passing on of tips like this that help make this site so good.
Some of us new to the game (well perhaps just me) struggle to see
the most elementary solutions. Please keep them coming.

Stew is only showing you this because we found a source of super high quality (Moore & Wright) thin (1/32") parallel sets, at a very low price, unfortunately, limited quantities.

Forget the spring, it's all about the parallels

Good, aren't they Stew?

A piece of foam rubber of the appropriate size will also help hold them in place. Piece of Styrofoam will also work.  :ddb: :ddb:

I never seem to come up with the simple solutions either. Nice tip.
