old motorcycle made mostly of wood???
« on: December 05, 2009, 08:32:16 PM »
he is another neat picture i found on the web.

looks like it is a single cylinder upright engine with some kind of combination belt/gear drive.
looking at it i think it might be safer and faster to walk.

Is he setting on the boiler? :bugeye:

Not to mention roast tatties .....

Looks similar to the Gottleib Daimler Machine .. could be the one perhaps ..

No chance of 'earholing it with the outriggers ....  maybe a training bike for tots ???

EDIT ...  No, it ain't ... or is it ??

If you scroll down this from Wiki it quotes 1885, as does the plate on the illustration posted ..

All it needs is a pillion seat and back then u could have pulled the chicks with it.

What a novellty!!!!

Asbestos lining under the seat and away u go.
From an early age my father taught me to wear welding gloves . "Its not to protect your hands son, its to put out the fire when u set yourself alight".

In an unsuccessful attempt to read the plate on the front, I saved the image. It labelled itself "gottleib daimler motorcycle". I reckon it must be internal combustion, because it hasn't got a chimney.

There don't seem to be any obvious brakes; perhaps that's why the original machine is no longer around

First you worry about getting it to move. If successful, then you worry about stopping it!

Maybe ..

In 1885 no other vehicles around to wallop into ..
Hence brakes superfluous

Aside from that I seem to think this machine still exists .. not sure .. cannot find a good reference , but
some years ago a friend went to S.Germany, and IIRC he says it's in a motorcycle museum.
But, it may be a replica, not the original.
Dunno. If I had it, I would sell it and buy a shed load of new bikes, before the weevils consumed it.

Check this out, third picture down. Gas powered for sure. Well worth reading the whole article. 264cc four stroke engine.
