Hi newby from Norwich
« on: January 23, 2010, 03:27:46 PM »
hi my name is Roy , I'm sixty mumble mumble and I have been into model engineering for about 9 months .
I've always wanted to but couln't afford it before.

I've made a few pieces of tooling and a stirling engine so far and I'm midway through a beam engine but it's too cold in the garage to do anything at the mo.

I'll put some pics up soon ( I know how much you lot like pics )

cheers

Hi Roy!

You made a sterling as your first engine? Nice job. Would love to see pictures of it and a build log of what you are working on.

Welcome to the collective :borg: resistance is futile

Very nice, both of them.... did you cut that frame from solid?
You will find it a distinct help… if you know and look as if you know what you are doing. (IRS training manual)

Hi
yes, I cut two sheets to size, bolted them together, printed the plan full size and stuck it on with double sided tape, then drilled holes in the corners and cut the pieces out with a hacksaw.

the base and bearing surfaces were milled so they were all parallel, the rest was a long filing job.

just the job on a cold day

cheers

That stirling is a fine engine. The fact that you have cut the second one out by hand shows that you have not lost the hand skills that were once required to make something like that. My hat is off to you for your fine effort with the hacksaw and the files.  :ddb: :ddb: :ddb:

Cheers

Hello Roy,

Welcome to the forum! I am another recent member and similar age, experience, etc and the job in my garage at the moment isn't getting full attention due to winter cold.

You initial efforts are impressive as well as the tooling you've made.

Sure you will enjoy it here.

Hi
thanks for the nice comments guys.
when its warmer I have a partly turned flywheel needs the spokes carving out.
I think I've evolved a way to do it without a rotary table ( cant afford one of those)

I may photograph the sequence and post on here somewhere if anyone is in the least bit interested  ::)

it wont be for a while tho, its still below zero out there and unlike computers and trolls my brain doesn't work at that temp. ( it doesn't work at all for long periods  :)

cheers

I must say that I would be more than the least bit interested

Please do post up any and all pics of your workshop endevours, and that goes for everyone else too, we all love to see what others are doing and how they do it, the more that do show what they do the more we all can learn from each other.

Roy.

Great job sir my hat off to you, knowing there was lot of psychical hand labor that went into this project makes it more appealing.

Anthony.
If you cant fix it, get another hobby.

Thanks

I'm just chuffed it ran as soon as I put some air through it :D
I'm looking for a nice piece of wood to make a plinth now.

I don't know whether or not to put a pulley of some sort on the shaft, if so , what sort, grooved, flat belt multiple groove.
any thoughts.

now I need another project.

That is a great looking engine that you have built there. Knowing the amount of hand work that went into it makes it all the more amazing. I guess that it shows what one can do if they want it bad enough. Thanks for sharing it with us. We look forward to your next build what ever you decide on.  :ddb: :ddb:

Cheers
