Suitable awg22 cable
« on: May 01, 2010, 05:55:21 PM »
Hey guys, hoping for some help as my Internet is down so struggling on my mobile internet. Basically, I need a 18 meter length of awg22 or awg20 cable for a project and ideally buy it tomorrow. I didnt know what awg stood for until I googled it, apparently American wire guage 22 is equal to 6.5mm and 20 is 8.1mm. I'm sure a good google uk would work, but it's too slow on here so could anyone recommend a suitable 3 core wire to meet these specs, or at least near? Ideally from somewhere local, bq, maplin ... Etc.
Hope someone can help. It is for a rotator for the antenna I built.

Chris,

You are a bit off on your conversion. 22 AWG is 0.025" and 20 AWG is approx. 0.032". That would be approx. 0.63 mm and 0.81 mm. Here in the US most of the table lamps are wired with 18 AWG. I would think the wire you used on the receiver project you posted would have been 22 to 24 AWG.

Here is a link that not only has the charts but explains how they came about.

Sorry, yea my original post has decimal place one forward! Thanks for info. The instructions, which other than wire guage are about as useful as a chocolate tea pot, say upto 125 meters use 20 guage and from there to a max of 250 use 22 guage. I only need 15 meters, I'll get thicker stuff if I can. I wonder what thickness 6amp twin and earth is, i have a reel of that somewhere- in bed right now so will dig it out tomorrow and see.

Chris

Nearest SWG matches are 22 SWG at 0.711mm and (if you can find it ) 23 SWG at 0.61mm diameter. Aerial wire is still sold in SWG sizes, I think, but if it's a mains-type power cable you are after:
22 AWG:  0.63mm diameter, so cross-sectional area = 0.31mm2
20 AWG:  0.81mm diameter, so cross-sectional area = 0.52mm2

Smallest UK lighting 3-core cable for rewiring your house is 1mm2. That will have solid cores.
But 2-core lighting flex for insulated table lamps, ceiling lights etc is available at 0.5mm2. So that would be the nearest match, if multi-strand 2-core will suit the application.

I've cut the end off it twice, but it's still too short

0.5mm2 3-core flex is readily available so you will also get the insulated earth wire with that. 0.75mm2 and 1.0mm2 are the next sizes up
