Brass Stirling for dad
« on: May 14, 2010, 07:04:45 AM »
Hi everyone,

I've been busy making this Stirling engine for my father's sixtieth birthday and completed it a few days ago.

As most of you will notice I've taken the design idea of the 'Hog' engine and started sketching.
The most challenging part came out to be the bearing for the displacer. I've used various combination of materials for the bearing and the rod, finally came with perlitic cast iron for the bearing and cold rolled steel for the rod.

Another struggle was to shorten the Pyrex test tube to length. Many shattered or were lost during the extensive testing period, where I had to take the engine apart more often then I considered amusing...
It turned out putting the glass in a collet in the lathe, spinning it slowly while rubbing it with a stone (used for sharpening cutters) was the only way I could get it cut. Upon the moment where the glass brakes, release pressure immediately or there's more clean up to do.

Currently I am making drawings of it which I will send free of charge upon request.
Here it is in motion:

That's it for now, I will notify the completion of the drawings here if there is some interest.

Greeting from Holland!

Absolutely amazing. I`m not skilled enough yet and after my LTD sterling failure earlier in the year I`m perhaps not ready to have a go but would certainly be a nice plan to file away if you would be willing to share! Looks super - I`m sure your dad will be thrilled.

Hi Jeroen;
What a lovely engine, and as a bonus, a great runner too.  You certainly do beautiful work.
Very nice!

I'd go for a set of plans, too.

Hello Jeroen,

No doubt your father will be very pleased to receive such a beautiful present, more so as it was made by you specially for him!

I've been making some initial efforts towards one of these engines and have found a good way to cut the glass tubes - get some of those cheap Dremel diamond cutting discs, mount a rotary tool on the lathe compound and the glass tube in the chuck. With the tube and the disc rotating contrary-wise, advance the compound slowly with a drip of either water or WD40 and you will get a clean cut. (took a lot of broken glass to come up with this!)

I would love to get a set of plans on this.

Best,
Mike

Hi Jeroen,

Looks a beautiful engine and am sure your dad was very very happy with his gift! Would love to make it 1 day. I've not been very active on here or in the workshop lately, other things keep getting in the way!

Wow, that's truly a work of art.

Based on that would have thought you could make a killing selling the plans to it ............but only after MM members have got their free copy  :)

I would like to thank you all for your appreciation and flattering comments!   :D

Please check the "download" section of the HMEM-forum (http://www.homemodelenginemachinist.com/) for the now finally completed set of plans. (I could not find an upload/download here, but I'm sure you will be able to find it there.)

Have fun and don't hesitate to ask if there is anything unclear or needs futher explanation.

Greetings from Holland, Jeroen
