Greetings from Singapore!
« on: June 14, 2010, 08:38:40 AM »
Hello all,

I was reading the post on topics that interest me as a guest for the past weeks and finally get to the registration part (tried previously but received a message that registration was closed).  I was amazed by the work of those I've seen here and those photos helps me to visualize what went on.

A little about myself.  I work in a bank handling home loans.  No background with any mills or lathes till I bought my Sherline mill and lathe late last year.  With no experience in anything engineering, learning is tough to start with.  The internet helps a great deal with me joining the Sherline, SherlineCNC, and MEWorkshop on Yahoo! groups.  There are many good folks in these groups that helped me a great deal without asking for anything in return. A kind gentleman from Ireland even sent me some books to get me started! I hardly know him then!  Amazing folks!

I'm still new and progress is slow given the little time and availability of tools in Singapore.  Hope to learn from the experienced folks in this forum.

Regards,
Wong

Welcome to MadModder Wong. We have many here with equipment similar to yours and various levels of experience. If you have any questions just ask as there is always someone around to answer or at least give an opinion. We look forward to seeing some pictures of your shop and projects as you have the time. In the mean time, look around the board and enjoy. :D :D

Cheers

Thanks for the welcome.

I've nothing much to show yet as work has not permitted me to do serious work and I'm still learning eve the very basic.

We live in a 1227 sq ft apartment.  I've converted my study to a "workshop" late last year to house my Sherline mill and lathe. I've also acquired a Proxxon mitre saw (25mm max diameter), a Proxxon bandsaw (thoat of 150mm), and am using wolfcraft's drill stand as my drill press (with a bosch hand drill due to lack of space).  Earlier this year (or was it very late last year???), I converted my lathe to CNC with the sherline's kit.  So far I've not use the lathe on CNC as I prefer the feel of turning the handwheels.  The mill was bought CNC ready, which I supply the motors and electronics.  The mill table was upgraded to 18", column bed to 15", and the base for Y axis to the longer base from A2ZCNC.

Pics of my "shop":

Don't make me post the Then & Now pics.... you'll be  :jaw:....

Now turning the blank for the torch.  Cut it a little too short to clamp & faced to required length of 25mm.  Diameter is also not uniformed.  Slight taper (around .01mm). Hope won't affect much thereafter.

Hey there Wongster.

Did you get the CNC router finished? I've not been to the Rockcliffe forums for a while now - Other stuff keeps coming up.

Hey No1_sonuk,
Good to "see" you here. Saw some of your posts.

No, I didn't finish. Went with Sherline's mill & lathe and decided to learn more on machining first. How are things going at your end?

Regards,
Wong

Hi Rob,

Thanks.  Not neat anymore with tools scattered around.  I'm interested in the die holder that some of the folks made.  Will make my attempt(s) soon.  Now its the brass torch for my 2 little girls.  Don't know what size O ring to get at this moment.  Just turned down the main body to 15.5mm (or there about with slight taper).

An tilting angle plate will be next.  Always wanted to make some parallel clamps but don't know how to dimension them and what kind of screw to get.  Will source for more information.

Regards,
Wong

Hiya Wong!

A little late... but better than never... Welcome to the collective :borg:

Nice shop you have going there. Very neat and organized.

I realize you are still learning, but what is your interest? What are you planning on making?

Cheers
Eric

Hi Eric,

Thanks!  My so called shop is no longer neat.

I picked up this as a hobby to keep myself from going insane.  I want to learn to make my own tools, little projects for my wife and kids (so that I won't get locked out of my bedroom...), maybe an engine or 2 to show off to my friends and colleagues.  Most friends and colleagues think that I'm crazy to pick machining as a hobby.

Hope to get the brass torches done before my 2 weeks' leave from office is over.  Heading back to "war zone" next Monday  :(  Still taking a step at a time.

Wong

Going well.
I realised most of what I wanted to do would better suit a milling machine, so I've "shelved" my router plans for now.

What did you get for your mill?
Wood is too messy for me to deal with and my lack of knowledge prevented me from moving forward with the router.

I got a Warco Mini Mill.  Basically an X2 type.

Wood machinery also tends to be very noisy.  Less need to worry about disturbing the neighbours, or needing to work in the corridor. ;)
