2" minnie build so far.
« on: August 09, 2010, 08:59:08 AM »

Here are some pictures of my doubled up minnie so far.

I rolled the front wheels after build a bending roll and brazed in the center ring which was trepaned out of 1/8 plate. The rear wheel is 12" in diameter and was machined from a peice of ALi pipe.

Nice work mate! I`ve got all the plans and book for the original Minnie and may one day consider building a 2" Minnie .. one day! Keep us updated and it looks good so far. Thanks for the pics and I would welcome any "machining" shots if you get time as you continue with this!

Good work...

what sort of time frame is this build?
if i'd thought it through, i'd have never tried it

Nice build Steve

I've built quite a few bits for 1" Minnies:- boiler feed pumps, bypass valves, lubricators and Cylinders, there a very well designed engine though I think the 1" scale is a little small but 2" is a different kettle of fish.

Look forward to watching progress

Looks like you are off to a good start, having built a 1" I'm sure the 2" will be a lot less fiddly to make much like the 2" Fowler I'm doing at the moment.

Don't know if you frequent Traction Talk Forum but there are a couple of others there currently building the 2" Minnie and a comple that have completed ones in1" 2", 2 1/2" and 3" so if you have any questions its a good place to ask.

Many thanks guys for the thumbs up.

It's good to get some feedback positive or negative, especially as I'm not a member of any model engineering society at present. I am running this project together with my princess marina in 3 1/2 inch gauge (see introduction for picture) . I'm not sure as to how long it will take just slowly gathering materials as money and time allows. Yes happy to add some machining pictures if you like.

Kind regards

Youv'e built a very nice engine there, hope mine ends up looking half that good.  Did you find any errors in the drawings?

I have been looking at stationroadsteam's archive and youtube for inspiration.

I built mine from the drawings in the book and can't recall any errors.

Steve,

Nice start. That is a nice looking model to build. Maybe in a few years I will have the patience to start something like that. Keep us informed of how it goes.

I've made some more progress on my minnie, desperately to get as much completed before the end of the year if I can dodge the decorating. Hope these are of interest. :bugeye:

Great! Seems to have come on a lot since you showed the front axle beam + wheels and a rear wheel rim.

Ihe last pic, the back wheel shows that the anti-gravity pack is working a treat

Andy, that anti gavity pack cost me a fortune! The only problem is slamming the garage door stops working!

Hi Steve, I was admiring the very fine machining of the cast iron shown in your lathe, and then on to the following pictures, am I right in believing you've taken that cast iron "sheeve", turned it into a wheel hub, and the arm(s) are to be spokes?  I must say, your lathe turns a very fine finish on the iron, and it looks great.  I see lots of small parts and rivets in your future   that should be a fine looking beastie when she's done.  Very nice work and nice layout altogether.  Looking forward to learning something about traction engines.  Cheers, mad jack

Hi Jack,

Thanks for the kind comments. The first two pictures show the winding drum which fits to the rear axle and was machined from a piece of cast iron round. The driving centre has still to be made and I think the quality of the material had more to do with the finish than my machining ability!

The next few pictures show the spoke pockets being machined in the wheel hub. The spokes I purchased as laser cut items from Malcolm at Model Engineers Laser (nice guy to deal with, no relation etc). The picture of the wheel in the building jig keeps everything in the right place while bending and fitting the spokes. It also shows the hub with it's cover in place. When I have fitted the first 8 spokes I will flip the wheel over and fit the rest.

I can happily take more pictures of this process if your interested.

Hi Steve,

Excellent work!!!

I would like to pick your brains...

What thickness of copper did you use for the boiler?

A 2" Minnie is my next big project (after the RE!!!) and I have been looking at doubling all specs in the book...except I don't think the boiler has to be twice as thick...or does it?

The wheels are fantastic. I will have to go for rolled having only 3 1/2" lathes and no mill. Any tips gratefully received. Did you make your own rollers?

Steve, its comming along well, got the fun bit of riviting in the spokes next :)

Andy, 5swg or nearest metric 3.0mm would be right for the 2" Minnie, the tube number and sizes want playing with though as its better to have a larger number of tubes that are not double the 1" scale diameter. There are several other items that can be slimmed down a bit as well to avoid a chunky looking engine and the water pump is best moved away from the boiler side.

Hmmm...don't know what happened to post twice...I thought it was just refreshing itself :poke:

Thanks Jason, I should have known to ask your advice

Steve/Jason: what pitch are you using/would you use for drive gears? The 1" uses 20DP gears..which just happen the be the same as Drummond changewheels (as Mr Mason points out). Just twice the size but with the same number of teeth (which is calculable but I haven't done yet)?

When you double the scale you half the DP so 10DP would keep all the gear centers in the same place. Number of teeth stay the same.

10DP is a bit fine if you want scale appearance but as its a freelance engine anything goes and its easier to cut 10DP on smaller machines than the 8 & 6 DP on my 2" Fowler.
