Please note the qualifier "I don't need to do production threading."  So long as sharp-corner v-threads are what you need, this will work fine.  However, if your work is subject to inspection to any of the formal standards, you will  be in a world of hurt.  Each pitch has a specific radius at the root/crest (external/internal) thread that is required to qualify under formal standards.

I realize that I am being pedantic here and that most here would not need to meet formal standards, but the caveat is something that should be known -- even by those who have no need of the formal standards compliance in their work.

Thanks Lew. I had no idea that there were standards for the radius at the root and crest. As you say, I don't need to work to standards for the things I build myself, but I will pay attention IF I ever need to make something for NASA.  Peace!

Richard,

If you look at the bottom of the first post on the thread, there's a link to the PDF there (below the picture of the threaded bar & tool).

Hi Ade,

I looked for a copy of this pdf but the link appears to have been edited out, is it not possible to download now?

Well, I can see the link, and have just tried it.

Below Paul's signature, and above the "Last Edit" line, it says:

 BD-LatheTools.pdf (100.96 kB - downloaded 204 times.)

I don't think that copy will work as a link. If not, you will have to go back to the first post and try to spot it.

I've cut the end off it twice, but it's still too short

Thanks for posting this. Sure looks easier than the internal threading tool I ground out of a normal 8mm HSS-Co Blank.
It would be easy enough to file a tip radius while it is still in the lathe, to ensure the correct root radius for a specific thread if desired.

For the external thread, you could have used the insert tool and jumped from

to this ...

Hi

Big thanks for sharing this will be added to my to do list.
I`m not a single point threading person as I wimp out and tend to buy taps/dies.   I had some info from john, doubleboost, regarding the full form carbides and holder but have not purchased any yet due to wife using funds for non vital stuff such as food etc.  But i do have some silver steel round lying about and this could be my first venture into single point.

Thanks again for great info and pdf
Paul

Now to adjust  2.5 Degrees on the  compound ( 60-55=5-(2x2.5)  for  our  METRIC  THREADS,  for this  side  of the  Pond
Don't  have  to  pay  couple  Hundred QUID (  NOT  Squid  !!! )  for Branded  Inserts
And  we can  dream on  about  ACME  as  well
This  is  just  fantastic.
