Thanks for the reply,

Ok, a bit more info..

The bush fits inot an alloy housing, a shaft passes thru driving a magneto on a stationary engine that I'm rebuilding.
The lube system is by splash feed with a scoop on the bottom of the big end cap..So it looks like the oilite bush is to some degree self lubing...

I've looked at buying a new bush but the size I require isnt available..

You can machine oilite with a sharp tool.
try sourcing a bush with larger OD , smaller ID and machine to size. It's also available in solid stick form but not usually cheap.

Out of interest what size are you looking for ?

John,

The bush I need has the following attributes:

i/d  =  0.75 in
o/d = 1.00  in
top hat diameter is 1.125 in and is 0.125 in thick.
overall length is 0.75 in

I had given some thought to buying a larger bush as a last resort, if I'm going to be machining, I'd rather do it from scratch...If I cock up machining a bought bush, I'm no better off, if I machine from bar stock, then at least I get more than one chance....Bought bushes aint cheap... :(

John,

That bush is available on this side for about 1 £ +/- a few pence. If you don't find one let me know and I will send you one.

Joe,
That would be the case wouldnt it......... :D

Since we went all metric it has caused all manner of problems and as such suppliers do not tend to keep legacy stuff.

I may have to take you up on your offer of help..

John,

Yes I'll be at Harrogate, I'll come and do some barracking... :D

How much are you owed for the bush please? Do you want paying now (Paypal or other preffered method) or at Harrogate?

I am in your debt.

Not got a clue how much, I'll have to ask because I won't get a bill until next month.
Harrogate is fine, be on the CNC's on the ARC stand, hall 2.

Oillite bushings are engineered materials designed for specific life and service factors.  Phosphor bronze tends to run extremely dry and can grab without lubrication.  What you'll need to assess is in this application, is there a way to get lubrication into the joint, will that lubrication maintain itself in the joint over the service life of the machine.  If the lubrication is likely to wear itself away, what are the chances that someone will remember to re-lube it.  Oil impregnated bushings of all shapes and sizes (and brand names) are available for pocket change around here, I'm betting they are available on your side of the pond for want of a little digging.

Very informative. I was just on the verge of buying some phosphor bronze to turn some bushes because oillite is'nt stocked by my supplier and has to be specially ordered.

Speaking of bushings and bearings, I found a few sites in the U.S.A. that have a huge selection and easy to order from websites.

#1 SDP/SI....lots of other neat stuff too.     http://www.sdp-si.com/eStore/CoverPg/bearings.htm

#2 Reid Supply ....lots of oilite bushings.     http://www.reidsupply.com/Results.aspx?pid=10021775

#3 VXB Bearing...lots and lots of "miniature" bearings.    http://vxb.com/

Enjoy!
