Hi From Austria
« on: October 27, 2010, 05:33:01 AM »
So I found this Forum via the HMEM Forum, it looks excellent!

I'm an ex-armourer, precision mechanics and industrial electronics technician who likes, to quote my wife, "fiddling with bizarre gadgets".

In the last few years most of my stuff has been firearm related but now that I have my own shop set up in the basement (Euro Equivalent of a 9x20 Lathe and X2 Mini mill clone) I hope to make some models aside from doing hobby gunsmithing stuff on my own firearms.

At the minute all I seem to be making is tools for the tools ;-) Carriage stops, Donut compounds, DTI holders, roller bearing steady rests etc.

Gerhard
Thanks for the welcome. Or should I be saying Baie Dankie? ;-)
I'm taking a stab in the dark here, but someone with a name like Gerhard, who lives in the UK, is quite possibly a fellow ex-South African?

My 9x20 Lathe is the horrible green one from RC machines in Luxembourg. I think a similar one is marketed in the UK by Warco.
The X2 mini mill is the Einhell version. It is soon to get a belt drive if I have my way.
I'm sick of babying the thing so as to avoid breaking a gear.

He he :headbang: Not many people know the Corvus Corax band but yes I do like some of their stuff.
In reality though, the name comes from an affinity for Corvids, that I have had my whole life long.

Gerhard.
Hey we are scattered all over the place these days. Not so long ago I heard a guy swear at someone in Afrikaans on the Vienna underground ;-)
Originally l built the 4 bolt compound when I got the Lathe in 2008. I just got the steel for the Donut and plan on finishing it in the next few weeks.
I'll coax the wife into playing photographer for me. She builds model aircraft as a hobby and just had me help her fix some minor stuff on a lot of models that have been in storage.

That ways protector of your is an excellent idea. I just got rubber matting for something similar and to keep the swarf out of the T slots on my mill. I can't just blow it out onto the floor here like I used to do at work.

I grew up on a farm and spent a lot of time hunting, that lead to an interest in nature and scientific names for animals and plants.

I did once build some gadgetry for a Corvid rehab project and helped with a Raven intelligence research project..

The Corvids are bright and aside from exhibiting tool use, they seem to know when people naturally like them.
