UK members, where are you?
« on: November 11, 2010, 02:12:22 AM »
Gents,

Even though this great site is run and hosted in the US, thanks to our benefactor Eric, it does have a very high UK population.

Unlike the US, which is a rather large place and model engineers seem to be spaced out hundreds of miles apart, here in the UK, we are a bit more densely packed. In fact, at my guesstimation, within a ten mile radius of where I live, there must be at least five hundred model engineers, maybe a lot more.

Maybe other areas of the country are not that well populated with us, but I am sure, everyone has at least one within easy striking distance.

If I could just make a suggestion. Rather than just having your UK banner, could you also include somewhere either your county or town as well. Addresses are not needed for security reasons, but the other two suggestions would really help. It should only take you a few seconds to change your personal details, but it would really help others to see exactly where you are.

Then we can all see if you are within striking distance when we give the offer of help. Sometimes it can be advantageous to be able to bring a problem over personally, rather than to try to discuss it online.

I would also like to bring your attention to this lapsed post.

Ps to do it well you have to put your location in the personal message box.
Thanks to  "Spurry" on a later posting for this info.

Many thanks Trev.

A bit far to go on my electric buggy, but at least if there is someone fairly local to you, maybe you can help each other out.

Stew and myself actually share tooling and materials, as we are only ten minutes walk apart. It can save a lot of time and money.

FWIW I don't know anyone in my area who's into this sort of stuff.

So have I, but I think you may need to add a line in your signature box, John, to get your whereabouts to show.

Done. Good idea.
Various domestic issues have stopped me from having anything worth posting of late, but I hope to be back with some updates on my 7 x 14 lathe before too long.

Looking down the postings, there are only two with the location displayed. Not sure if my display is the same as everyone elses's. Seems that the Personal text field under the picture section of profile has to be edited to display your location, leastwise mine does.

Pete, I think some of us have put it at the foot of our posts, rather than to the left, under the Union Jack.

I tried it in the location field but that only comes up if you click the person's profile. Some people have put in personal text, i've put it in signature same as you Andy.

Well I'm here. How about you?   :poke:

Been here for ages now

Signed up to the location thingy last time  :)

Tis a good idea, there are quite a few members near here, Crewe, Ffestiniog, The Wirral, Sale, Warrington..... All pretty close to me really.

I regard within 1.5 hours drive pretty close. That's average ~90 miles.... Maybe 200 if I'm not watching my right foot   problem is it costs a fair bit when your running 15-20Mpg  :bugeye:  Wasn't so bad in the diesel!

I've been to visit Bogs, Stew, Darren and Ade. All fun visits. I'm pretty easy going, if a little odd  :loco: .

Visits often including some form of trade, but not always. They do however always help you see many things differently, it's amazing the amount of info swapped in conversation.... Yes actual conversation between people, in the same room!!!  I know! The miracles of ancient erm, talking!  :smart:

I'm going to amend my side bar location destination thingy..... With a closer representation of my whereabouts. Although North Wales will fit into most towns in the U.S. it's still too bloody big to wander around looking for one man and his workshop :ddb:

Not giving out the postcode mind (that'd be silly online!)  but more a sense of where I am

Gents,

Thank you very much. What a great bunch of chaps.

It is nice to know that there are so many members within about an hours drive of myself, and of course, all are welcome for a coffee and a chat, no matter where you are from. But if ever the wife throws me out, I know where to go.

Maybe most of us will get to meet at Harrogate, 13th, 14th and 15th May 2011.

Where, health permitting, John Somers and myself will be having a buggy race. He is guaranteed to win, he is only half my weight, plus although we have the same type of mini buggy, his has four wheels to my three.

Lets see a few more then, don't be shy.
