New Fan Mount
« on: November 21, 2010, 12:05:19 AM »
The wife bought a small clip on fan for the babies room and we didn't like the huge clamp that it uses.  We want to mount it to a window sill and the clamp was too big to fit so I made up a replacement end that uses three # 10 screws to hold it in place.  The window sill is painted white so covering up the holes will be easy when the fan is removed in the future.

The mount is made out of 3" aluminum bar and was turned on the lathe and then moved to the mill with the rotary table to drill the holes.  The fan has an adjustable mount that uses springs and two ball bearings so it clicks into place when spun and won't turn on it's own.  To retain this feature I had to make a recess for the metal mount and drill four holes for the tabs to go into.  In the end it turned out great and works just like the original clamp.

David.

Still drilling holes... Sometimes, in the right place!

Still modifying bits of metal... Occasionally, making an improvement!

Nicely done, very classy looking, much better than the clamp.
