Another Part Build.....
« on: November 24, 2010, 02:10:32 AM »
Yesterday morning, a nice young man, in a big white van, brought me a big white parcel.....  :D

Some sort of spinning wheel?

That's extended the "to do" projects well into next year, or beyond!

My Grand Mother had an old spinning wheel when I was a kid and it didn't look anything like that.
It will be interesting to see if you can spin wool when you are finished with it.

Whoever that nice young man was, it looks like he made a pretty good job of it so far.

Cheers

Good Lord, they get bigger  :bugeye:

What's happened to 'Big Bertha' ??. That Australian wotsit ?

Might not be a spinning wheel anyway, could be a Glopitter-Glopitter ..

Nice anyway ..

From ebay? There was one very similar to this, but I gave up before bidding, itīs too big for my shop! Did the nice young man, in a big white van, also bring, or have you arranged from other sources, any drawings for it? Itīs a lovely engine, when fully built, and at that size, it could pump plenty of water also, if you wanted to press it into service. Rider-Ericssons have a lot of action in them, when working!
A very nice find. Plenty of bits still to do, to keep you occupied for a while!

Thanks for your comments Chaps!

It was posted on Ebay, Sunday Night. So, I posted the link on here.....
Next morning, the BIN was still there! Ok, said I, I'll have it!

It arrived, from Morecambe in 25hrs.

It's been somewhere a little damp. Very mildly furry. No problem, at all......

What you see is what there is. Seems very well made, by Grandfather, who passed on some time ago.
I can see someone keeping a memento which turns round an round, an bobs up an down. But, throwing away the "bits of junk"......  ::)

I will probably contact Myers Engine Works, for the missing bits. Just thankfull, all the large parts which I can't do are done.

Lots to learn, yet!

Had a quick lesson in flywheel inertia...... Got me finger between the rocking beam, and the top of the water jacket!

You're lucky Dave, I nearly had that one.

I sent him a request to see if he had any of the missing bits. When he said no, I gave up on it.

Life is getting a bit short for me to go around searching for bits any more. I like things very straight forwards nowadays.

It should make up into a great engine, and you are the one to do it.

The Huxtable is "finished". Just needing setting up on a wooden base.

Olli.
I have a drawing/ build scan. But, I don't yet know if it is the same one as in the recommended book.

Does anyone have a copy of  "Steam and Stirling - engines you can build" to sell, or lend me?
(I don't mind buying my own, but usually, someone says afterwards, "I've got one of those you could have had")......  ::)

Steady on Graham!  :bugeye: I'm only a bodger. Honest!

John.
I fully expected it being gone by morning..... I spent some of the night wondering why I hadn't just grabbed it, while I had the opportunity!

Bernie.
That's the one! I think!     http://www.myersengines.com/engines/pumping_engine_1-b.htm
Don't hold your breath...... The Robinson engine is first. After all else in my life has been attended to .......

David -  You're as bad as me!  :proj: Nice looking engine, will be excellent. I bid on an engine on ebay a couple of nights ago, it was a free-lance stirling a bit like mine but had a ross yoke linkage and was advertised wrongly as a steam engine. Still went for about Ģ70-Ģ80 in the end, think I stopped at Ģ60. It was really well made and with a strip down and polish it would have been worth probably double the money but I've got enough projects on the go so probably just as well I didn't win the auction!

Hi Nick
I was watching that too! But I really need something BIGGER!

For a long time, a Rider Ericsson was my dream engine, though I knew I'd never actually own one.......

That's a nice one, David!  It will be a beaut when you get your magic done on it.

Heyup ma duck!
It's nice to see, you're still making progress. Albeit, slowly......

No shop activity, here. I've not turned a chuck, since January's weather shut me down.  :(
The old feet, just don't want to hold me up any more. Which is a bit of a pity, cos' I need to stand on em, at times!  :palm:
Also, I'm just getting over another bout of sciatica, due to the spinal wear n tear.

Frankly. I'm wearing out, rapidly.......

Still have several orphans, needing attention. Hope I can get out there again, soon.......

Best, David.

Hey up marra, sorry that youve not managed any play time and hope you can get out to the shop soon
The engine is comjng together in a fashion although Im now completely of drawing but a redeeming thing is she will now be more like the  original engine.
Will do a few pics once I get my head round this new infernal P,C
Need to figure out the water connection and re bore the cylinder casting for the liner then I should be on home ground
Sure gives me a greater appreciation  of the work youve done
cheers duck

I'm so sorry to hear life has caught up with you also. We just wore our bodies out way before there time. I have Rheumatoid Arthritis and it makes life almost not worth the living. I ave machines and many projects that will never get started.
My prayers and best regards.

There's a lot more than meets the eye.  To getting old, and remaining upright......   :palm:

Thanks for the PM, I guess what I was going at is if it is pain there is a product called "Stopain". I used it yesterday and had one of the best night sleep in years. Today wasn't bad either.

Thank you, for caring, Nelson.

The earlier posts were written back in July. After almost three years, of mounting pain and discomfort.

Thankfully, my son has some medical knowledge. He advised, stop taking the statin tablets I had been prescribed, three years earlier!

Now, after two months, I am a reasonably fit pensioner again! Also, my lethargy has gone. I'm back to whatever passes as normal, for my age and condition.

If only, other "old age" problems could be cured, so easily........
