Cleaning

For those of you who didn't miss me for the last week, a short explanation. I went into the hospital on Nov. 30 for a heart operation to fix a leaky valve and one clogged artery. As you can see everything went find since I'm posting this.

Anyway, the purpose of this post is similar to the "How clean is your shop" thread elsewere. Since I can't lift anything heavier than 5lbs for the first week I thought I clean up my office space/machineshop. Below is a picture of just the computer area.



I figure once I'm backup to 100% steam I'd do a bit of light duty cleaning/orginiazing. 

I'll keep adding to this post as time goes on. I may need an occasional  to keep me going. I'm sure there a few of you out there that will more then happy to comply with that request.

Either get someone else to do it for you (like I do) or leave it. The world won't collapse around our ears just because Bernd didn't clean out his shop.

Well, not our world perhaps, but left long enough it's quite possible that Bernd's world will collapse around his ears... probably just after extracting that tool down there that's got almost nothing on top of it............

I've visited Bernd's shop.  It's fairly small, and quite full of all sorts of stuff.  Funny thing is, he's got a huge basement, and he walled off this tiny little corner for the shop.

Reason for that was that I was going to fill in the rest of the basement with a huge model railroad. But along came Madmodder..............

Thing is with a Bridgeport, surface grinder, Logan lathe, Buffalo Forge drill press and assorted wood working equipment plus wood and ................
The basement got pretty crowded. Just look back through any of my posts of the basement.

Well I think I discovered a third. When you have the room {small  at you Bog's} you just move the "stuff" like in the picture to a new and undisclosed horizontal storage area. I don't think you call it cleaning, it's more like redistributing the mess to another location.     

Besided that I found a project I had started, one of Elmer's engines and my "Round Tuit". So now there's no excuss of not getting round tuit.

I'll post some pics later today if get into the shop.

Ok here's what it looks like now.

And I had started a boiler. This was written up in Live Steam many years ago.



My first portable computer. A Tandy PC6 with BASIC for programing.

The right side of the basement. Here's what your looking at, bandsaw, planer, joiner, Bridgeport.



More left is the Logan lathe, drill press, planer, and behind the planer the upper part of the Buffalo drill press.

Right side of the basememnt. Lots of storage units and shelveing units, bascially a storage area for what might be needed some day.

And finely my second computer station. Remeber Eric saying something about those disks? To the right of the tower is my DOS base computer. Still works. I use it for AutoCad since it drives my E size HP plotter.



Now this is were the frustrating part comes in. As you've seen I've got a lot of horizontal storage through out the whole basement. Imagine how frustrating it is looking for a tool you laid down somewhere. That's one of the reasons I don't get any projects done, I spend more time looking for my tools. So I'm hoping I can get a bit of orginizing done to make my life a bit easier.

John, if we added the space we have with the four shop we have between us ,we still would not have half as much space

Bernd's basement is HUGE.  Something like 1000 square feet.  He's got enough lumber to build a normal sized shop (or two) in there, and enough machines to furnish it, as well.  There is all sorts of neat stuff everywhere you look.  Can you tell I have a bit of envy?


Bernd is the very personification of     and has a bunch of stuff all in various stages of completion, including the house itself.

It's a table saw. In front of it is a treadmill motor. I'll dig it out and take some closer pics for you.

I'll give a few details here. First thanks guys for the get well messages.

Now the size of the basement is 2300 square feet. Not all is used for my shop. The orginal plan 10 years ago was to fill with an HO scale layout. I even started on it. There's a 4' X 8' section built. As things progressed over the years I got more interested in a machine shop than a layout of such large size.

Stew, I'll take some close ups of those steamers for you.

John, Ya I do have a bit of wood dust contamination. I try to keep that to minimum with an air filter unit I built using a furnace squirrel cage fan with two course filters in front the cage and a fine filter behind the cage. Does a pretty good job if place close to the wood working machine you are using. Right now it needs to rebuilt. When I do that I'll post a thread on it.

And here are the pics as promised.

First the saw. It's a small table top saw either made by Sear & Robach Co. and sold by Dunlap or the other way around. It had no motor when I got it. I'm going to use a tread mill motor to power it when I get around-tuit.







Next are the steam engines. These are On30, that's code for O scale, narrow gauge, 30" track width. Baiscally these engines will run on HO gauge track.

Here's a picture for comparison between HO and O scale. In the background are the two O scale engines. Infront are two HO scale standard gauge ( 4'-8.5") three truck, three cylinder Sahys



Here's a pic of a bunch of engines and cars. Two Porter engines, a small diesel, the gray one and the black steamer. To the left of the little Porter diesel is a scratch built engine in the not quite done stage as all my other projects. In front of the is a Pierce Arrow railtruck. These were made from Pierce Arrow trucks. LINKY HERE Scroll down. The cars are little side dump gondola's. Behind the steam is a tank on a flat car. Then behind the tank car is another unfinished engine I'm scartch building with log cars to the right of it.



And this is how to utilize horizontal storage.

Here's one of when I started. Notice, no horizontal storage. And much less on the floor too!





I know somebody's going to ask about that round wooden thing on the floor. It's were the sump pump would have gone to pump out the cellar. I was lucky and it drains out by itself.

  I have table saw like that. Says "Craftsman" on it. Got it from my brother-in-law before he passed away.

 Don't use but can't get rid of it either.
