New Project!!
« on: November 08, 2008, 11:06:58 AM »
Well I got down to the shop last night and got a new project started. My camera batteries died as I was working, but I did get 1 picture.

Started to get the stock sized and faced. Anyone wanna guess what I am working on??

Yah... Between the 2 of you I was definitely shamed into making one. I think I have been talking about it for a year now. About damn time eh?

Ya, about time.  ;D

I was thinking about it when Ralp posted that first video of him making nice shiny "rounded" objects.  :D ( I'm not going to use that other word )

I don't look on it in a negative way.... I.e. shaming..... I look on it as pushing a man in a direction to which he does not yet appreciate the benefits....
Ok we kinda shamed you into it  ;D

You will never regret making the tool though Eric.... Much too much fun if you let the creative side loose with the bar stock

Waiting to see the progress..... (oh and all the other projects too!!!  :D )

Got some more shop time in today.

Finished up the bottom portion of the base. Added the 2 mount holes to attach the base to the cross slide.

Test fit it on the lathe

Then I took the other chunk of stock and faced it off.

Shaped the bottom of the upper base so it will fit the bottom part of the base.

I took the piece out flipped it around and cleaned the top portion up (forgot to take a pic). Then did a test fit again.

Brought the top part over to the mill. Added the slot for the tool, counter bored the center hole (for the bolt that connects the two pieces), and added the 2 access holes for the mounting bolts. Again, I forgot to take pics for the during. But here is the result test fitted to the lathe:

The access holes are so the base can be mounted and unmounted to the lathe without taking it apart:

I still have some work to do to the base... added the screws to hold the tool in place and drill and  tap a hole for the lever to spin the ball turner. Then I have to make the L shaped tool holder itself. Maybe tomorrow.

Eric

Looking good Eric, I esp like where you have placed the pivot and mounting holes.
Nicely covered by the L shaped tool holder.

I see why yours is a bit different. You don't have the T slots like I do on my Grizzly.

It'll be intersting to see that first ball come off of your turner. I'm wondering how round it'll be. :o  ;D

Eric
I think if you modify the base of the tool holder with maybe a dove tail post instead of the "L' shaped one. That way you can cut concave and convex without much extra work.
just my $.02

WOOO

ANOTHER BALL TURNER!!!

If I can make a suggestion.. and add in my .02 Yen....

Make your L shape with extra length to it on each side. That way if you are sliding it out near the limit of what you can spin.. you have the extra meat to lock it into the thing securely.
If you make it reversable.. so you can do a concave.. add material that way as well.

I made mine "longer than I will ever need"  and I was wrong. I run into situations all the time where I am doing a concave and need the extra length.. and still have 1 of 4 cap screws not securing it.
