Greetings Earthlings
« on: March 10, 2011, 11:07:45 AM »
Howdy all. I see many familiar names here. Been keeping an eye on MadModder for quite some time. It's time to come up for air, make a few posts, mingle with friends, make new ones.

Current project is an Upshur. I am taking my time with it.

Will post progress on this and other engines as time marches on.

Hello Trout,

I've watched your posting on HMEM and am always impressed  - e.g. the 'Recipe for Upshur Flywheels', really comes in handy as I'm building the Upshur horizontal at the moment and ran into the same problem with flywheels. The only difference between ours is I'm using some tin/bronze for the rims. My 'plan' is to shrink fit the bronze to the Al centers but sometimes my plan doesn't work out.

Your Upshur is looking good and your a bit in front of me, but I'm about as slow as it's possible to be without going backwards!  :bugeye:

Looking forward to more posting on your build.

Best,
Mike

p.s. - why Troutsqueezer? I've done a fair amount of fly fishing and wonder if you are also involved.

Thanks for the warm welcome guys, I sure appreciate it.

Mike, I dunno, I move pretty slow myself. I get distracted easily by other projects. I think it's a good thing though. My tendency in the past was to become almost obsessive with my hobbies and burn myself out after awhile. I don't want to do this with hobby machining.

Tin/Bronze rims might provide a good contrast between the two metals and should look very nice! I'm looking forward to seeing them.

I'm working on oil cups now for the Upshur. See, now that illustrates how slow I am. Most people would say "well, I made some oil cups during my lunch break today". But me, I'm just working on them....

Hi Artie, I'm glad you've chimed in! I'd know that avatar anywhere.  Looking forward to some friendly, peaceful atmosphere.....  :med:

Mike, I just noticed your P.S.

The Troutsqueezer moniker indeed comes from fly fishing as a teenager. I have fond memories of tying many many flies and had quite a collection at one time.  There are those (such as my old buddies) who have attached different meanings to the moniker, all in good fun.

Hello Trout,

Unfortunately I understand your 'attacking' an area of interest and burning out - as they say, "been there, done that, have the t-shirt". I'm trying to approach machining with a bet less ardor such that I don't lose interest too soon.

Yep, done loads of fly-fishing and tying - still have all my tying and fishing gear although haven't been doing much the last few years. Maybe now I'm retired I'll have the time to spend on it.

Still working on the flywheels but making good progress and will be posting some shots later.

Best,
Mike

That's what we all said.  Somehow it never works out that way. Particularly if your married.

Hello Dave,

I'm starting to understand that - in fact, I wonder how I ever got anything done before I retired as I sure don't have all that 'free time' I was looking forward to!

Best,
Mike

MikeA

You may want to consider going back to work just to get a rest. I think I had more free time before I retired than after I retired. Enjoy your retirement Mike.

Dennis

Welcome to MadModder, you know the drill, same as HMEM. Lots of pictures and we will love you. Look forward to your posts.  :D :D
