little boxes made of ticky tacky
« on: March 10, 2011, 04:04:20 PM »
I see there are some wooden jewelery boxes posted here. I guess I'll show a couple I've made. I used to really crank these things out. One thing about using exotic hardwood, some if it really makes your nose itch.

Nice work Trout. I particularly like the quilted maple. Got any left over you'd like to send me?

Thanks for the compliments guys.

Kudos to you, Woodguy, for recognizing Big Leaf Quilted Maple. I do have some left and have been thinking about making some steam engine bases out of it. Actually I've got a whole big box chock full of exotic hardwood bits and pieces. In with it are a couple hundred pen blanks of almost every known type of hardwood. Well.....a lot of different kinds at least.

I had to give it up Bernd, when my hands started to fall asleep every time I lifted them higher than my belly button. All that sanding and finishing gave me Carpel Tunnel after awhile.

It's always something you know. Every hobby I undertake has some side effects. With machining, Plantar Faciitus has kicked in from standing in front of the lathe for long periods. Now I'm making a short stand for the lathe so I can sit down when turning metal. I already sit in a high back office chair when running the milling machine.  Did I mention there's a back massager on it?

I used to do pencil portraits of people. One day, my eyes were blurry and wouldn't clear. Came to find out that I was staring too hard at the pictures while I was drawing them and my eyeballs were drying out. Geez.....

As a kid, I lived the houses the song was written about, in Daly City, near S.F. in California. My boxes are only slightly smaller than the real thing. :)

Those are really nice. I wish I had some skill with wood like that. I would make my wife a nice jewelry box and myself a wood tool box...

Great job. Could you list the woods used in each picture?

Thanks
Eric

Sure Eric,

In the top picture, the carcass is made from Bird's Eye Maple and the lid is made from Big Leaf Quilted Maple.

Second picture, the box with remotes is made from Bubinga and the lid is Quilted Maple again.

Third pic the carcass is Paduk, a beautiful red tinted wood and again the lid is Quilted Maple. I bought a big piece of Quilted Maple as you can tell.

Fourth pic is the same as the first pic.

Last pic, the carcass is made from Cocobolo and the lid...you guessed it...is made from Quilted Maple.

I really do have a lot of boxes without Quilted Maple. Don't know why I didn't show any of those. :)

I think you keep your lunch cool in the front section, and melt wax with the heat you take out of your lunch in the back section.

I cannot imagine why, however...

BTW, those boxes are some seriously beautiful work. That Big Leaf Quilted Maple is really stunning, in a couple of those pictures it almost looks like it's got a pearl effect.
Cheers!

Is this by any chance used for extracting honey? Just a wild guess.

OK

Wild guess ... filtering beeswax ... for polish ... or on toast ...

BC

BTW, there's a poem/song about Birds-Eye Maple ... poke the MP3 button on ...

Not that it would make any sense at all for folk not from North West England ...

AdeV, Thanks for the compliment! Wrong guess on the box though!

woodguy, you've been hanging around groundhogs way too much...

Don, close....you've hit on the right hobby but wrong application. I use a centrifugal honey extractor for that job. It's like a really big salad spinner.

Ding ding ding! sparky961 gets the prize! After I extract the honey from the bee hive frames, I scrape off the wax honey comb and put it in this box under the hot CA sun. It melts down into the pile of "groundhog poop". Then I melt it down further into blocks and such to eventually make candles, etc.

BC, you and I were typing at the same time. It does filter the wax to a degree, a lot of the pollen and bee parts don't slide down the metal ramp into the plastic bucket but I do filter the wax more at a later stage. And yep, I do use the beeswax on some of my boxes.  Oh, for toast, I use the stuff right from the jar.

I thought I was going to get star thistle honey last year and made the labels to reflect that but it turned out to be dark honey, from another type of plant. Yumm....

I`ve never touched wood at all in terms of anything so intricate. I`ve made a set of stairs which I was quite proud but that is my limit. I must admit, I`ve always fancied making a hardwood box and this thread has really inspired me. You have a talent - I hope one day you find some time to post construction pictures! I`d be sure to have a go and try and follow them!! Have you got any construction pictures?

  great work!
