Problems selecting items
« on: March 23, 2011, 12:08:42 PM »
Is anyone having the same problem as myself with the site?

When I click on anything, say to go to a post or to open up a topic, I have to click on it a few times to get it to open, sometimes it doesn't open at all, just showing a blank screen waiting to open, then I usually have to select back.

This only started today, and nowhere else on the web is giving a problem.

I haven't noticed anything on this end. Seems to be working fine. I was on this morning at home and here at work... no delays. I will dig into it though and see what I can find out. I may end up restarting the server tonight...

I have even turned my adblocker off to see if that was causing the problem, but no joy.

Nothing has been touched, changed or loaded this end, and is only happening on this site.

In fact, I had trouble opening this reply message

John,

If you're running Windows XP, you can try "tracert" to see if you can find the problem.

You'll probably find one of the "hops" along the route from your machine to the madmodder machine is acting slow or flakey.

This is the result from my machine (notice the last but one hop is not responding to "pings", hence the asterisks:

Saw,

I don't want to get into the battle of softwares, that gets no-one anywhere, I was just asking if anyone had the same problem as I am.

Ade,

I suspected that it might be somewhere along the route. I had the same sort of problem a few years ago with HMEM.

My ISP gets changed tomorrow, so I will see if that makes any difference, they might route a different way.

As well as the recent outages on madmodder which Eric (may his name be praised and his tribe increase   ) has fixed, I noticed a general slowness on various sites including madmodder over the last week or so, but things seem to have improved in the last two days.

Of course, my 10-year old laptop may have something to do with it, and maybe I have been logging on when the kids get home from school and all log on to Facebook at the same time.

We did have an outage this morning (noonish for you over the pond). Not related to the site. My provider had a small problem that was corrected.

The issues with the site that John is talking about is separate from this morning. I am not having any trouble with the site from multiple locations and providers. I have had friends throughout the US check... again, no-one is citing any issues. I am not sure it is the forum...

Apart from the outage Eric mentions, I don't have any problems at all ..

Can wander in and out with no significant delays on this rather basic lap top ..

Vista 32 bit. IE8. 1.6GHz Processor. 1Gb Memory .. according to some folk ...

Shouldn't work at all really  ... should it??  ...

Although I must admit it doesn't boot up very smartly ... must try a new flint ..

Well, I have slow ass issues with all sorts of sites, youtube, photobucket and BBC Iplayer constantly pause and take 20-30 seconds to figure out what's happening.

I blame my old computer and really have issues when all this other stuff starts working in the background.

I know there are far, far greater minds than mine talking about this on here, just thought I'd say It seems normal to me and rarely plays up here.

Often my first visit of the day I often have to relog back in because the cookie has gone away, but apart from the sql server outage issues you mentioned, its all fine to here. I guessed the cookie going away was down to the hosting provider doing some kind of reboot out of hours or something.

My packets take the atlas.cogentco.com transit except for the last few hops which is in the oneandone host network so a different route completely than the uk people. That **** item is probably the hosting companies load balancer, and configured to ignore icmp requests for security reasons...

If it is a broken routing table between the uk and the us, theres not a lot brass machine can do about that though. And mostly regardless of isp in the uk, you take the same routes because theyre all either reselling bt broadband kit, or transiting on their backbone connections because of peering arrangements. But, theres I'd imagine, already a load of angry emails flying round between companies technicians and posts to the isp mailing lists about the broken peering if so as it will have been picked up by monitoring tools, and it will get fixed because everyone has service level agreements to meet or suffer a contractual financial penalty, and lost money talks really loudly :)

Hiya John,

It is upsetting to hear you are having issues... but I am quite certain it isn't us that is the root cause. Perhaps it is somewhere in between us and you... The ISP and server have responded positively to all the tests I have battered it with. ISP tech support and my co-workers (who are web geniuses) have pronounced the site good. I hope you are able to resolve this issue.

Eric,

I know, if you could, you would sort the problem for me, so don't you go worrying yourself over it.

I have tried it on IE8 (which is garbage) but still the problem persists, and I have even tried an earlier version of Firefox, to no avail.

At the moment it isn't too bad, about half a dozen clicks and maybe get somewhere, but I just can't trust it enough to do a largish post.

Ade V, the computerised whizzkid, is calling tomorrow, maybe he will be able to trace the problem for me.

I am also sure that it is not the site, but somewhere in between.

John and Stew, it may be local to you two. Well, if you must live down among the Cheshire cats and cheeses ...

25 miles away near Manchester, I had a bit of slowness a few days ago, but all seems well now, apart from the occasional pause in videos on YouTube.  As mentioned before, my laptop is 10 years old, which in computing terms is geriatric. 1.8 GHz and just 750 Mb ram, with IE8.

I've just tried one of those speed tests, which says 6.9Mbps download and 0.7 Mbps upload. That surprises me, but it's 9.30 on Friday night, which might be a bit off-peak.

Bogs,

was just thinking, maybe you could do a system restore back to a time when you know it was working (if you haven't installed anything significant you want to keep in the mean time). Just to check whether it is something that's happened with your system and rule that one out?

Nick,

I am very reluctant to do a system restore unless there is anything critical gone wrong.

This is the only problem I have, and it started before I had my new fibre broadband installed, and I don't want to disturb any of the settings or software I have with that.

I have just done a quickie check.

Would you put something like that in jeopardy, just to get it so that you can access one site correctly?

I don't think so.

You won't loose the broadband speed its independent from jour pc  if AdeV bring a lap top and hooks up he would had near enough the same speed

Just a thought try downloading the browser from Google called Chrome its said to be ok for the pc world ( i.e. MS powered )

My other thought is if Stew is getting the same it could be the ping speed , not the balls out DL speed. although once the web page is on your pc any actions are local .

Has MS DL a sneaky update file ,because I have a number of friends that have suddenly had problems

Unfortunately, I forgot my laptop (one of the downsides of a 4am start + my useless memory); but one thing we did establish is that while MadModder is the only one of John's regular sites that doesn't work properly, it's not the ONLY site (oldskoolford behave the same).

Must admit, it's got me stumped. I reckon there's a router either in the 1st or 2nd exchange that's got some kind of fault on it. Tracert works perfectly. DNS works perfectly. It's just that, one click in 2 (or more) is simply not acted upon. The browser sends out the request, but the server never receives it, so the browser then sits there doing b*gger all, waiting for a response that's never coming.

I can definitely empathise with John's frustration. I'd be ready to throw bricks by now, if my favourite site was acting up like that...

Next time I'm over, assuming the problem is still there, I'll definitely take my laptop.
Cheers!

if you can work out where it goes wrong, you can put a bit of static routing in to john's pc while your there to bypass the problem hops.  :-

I am having problems now, it started yesterday. I try to get into the site and it times out 30 seconds and says no server found. Everything else (or sites I go to) is fine. When I do get in and go to read a topic sometimes it waits and thinks then just goes blank. Any ideas?

Anthony,

Same symptoms almost.

In fact for a couple of hours today, the site wouldn't open at all.

It must be those damned gremlins back again :(

Yes same here server timed out after 30 sec , error line 1450
the other day Buffer over flow at line 0

I wonder if there is some place on this tinternt thingy a duff session of this site that is not being flushed for us in the UK but is OK for the US , for it seems that the problems are localised to the central area

Stuart, I had the same time-out problem this morning (Sunday) and when I did manage to get connected, everything was really slow. But all seems well again, now.

Could not access the site some 3-4 hours ago - I was timed out waiting for a response.
I believe our South African connection is via the USA.
There was no problem with any other sites in the UK, USA or Australia that I accessed today.
Connection now is immediate like always!

It makes perfect sense to me, Marv. In my case, just substitute tomatoes.

Any more contributions? We could open a recycled veggie restaurant!

There is a perfectly rational - and thoroughly disgusting - reason why barf invariably contains bits of carrot (or tomato, if you're weird)...

I thoroughly enjoy following the British colloquialisms on here.  As you are probably aware, English is no longer spoken in the United States, so the only way I get to enjoy it is listening to the banter here.

Yup. We had an issue this morning. Same as I get every now and then... got a stray process that runs haywire and locks the processor at 100%. Can't get into the server to reboot it and have to have the ISP hit the button for me.

I will get that issue fixed. Bad timing for it to happen...

And what the 'ell is a "nowt"

"Nowt", as in "Nowt tekken' oot"  = "Nothing taken out"...

Nowt is probably most frequently used in North East England (Rob Wilson's neck of the woods), but is heard all over the country, especially if one is taking the piss out of some hapless Geordie.

The opposite of "Nowt" (nothing) is, naturally, "Owt" (anything). e.g. "Whud thur be owt else, love?" - usually heard at a "greasy spoon" (roadside cafe) after you've ordered your traditional greasy spoon breakfast (fried bacon, fried eggs, fried mushrooms, fried black pudding, deep-fried sausage, fried tomato, baked beans, deep-fried hash brown (up-market establishments only), fried bread, 2 rounds of buttered toast, and a large mug of white tea with 3 sugars).

Hmm, that's made me hungry... must be breakfast time  :D
Cheers!

"Nowt" and "owt" are dialect forms of naught (as in "it all came to naught", or nothing) and "aught" meaning something. Naught and aught have largely fallen out of use, but nowt and owt are very much alive and kicking in  northern England.

You learn summat new every day!

It certainly is Nick.

But I don't know whether I should be posting in this topic, it seems to be all about different languages.

Just to get this post back on track.

Overnight, without being asked, my ISP did a few checks and found faults with the way I was being routed to different areas on the web.

So when I started to surf the site this morning, things were back to normal, thank goodness.

So it looks like Ade was correct when he pinged his way to the site and found a few things not right.

I just hope it now stays that way.

Glad it's sorted out for you John

As we estabished that OldSkoolFord didn't work either, I reckon there were probably a number of websites (most of which we'd never have heard of) were affected, and it's probably a few people in your area with the problem; a few complaints by different people would have got BT wondering; obviously they found the fault & seem to have eliminated it.

Cheers!
