Carbide insert thickness
« on: April 24, 2011, 04:34:35 AM »
As a newbie I would appreciate some help please.

I have a set of 3/4" shank M100 DEX toolholders that I use on my Colchester Student. They were supplied with CCMT 31.51 inserts (ISO equivalent CCMT 090204) retained by a torx T15 screw.

I try to keep my costs down, but these inserts are not too common on eBay - is it possible to use a thicker insert such as the commonly available CCMT32.51, (ISO CCMT 0903XX or CCMT 09T3XX)?

ANSI - ISO - THICKNESS
1.5 - 02 - 0.094" (3/32" or 2.38mm)
n/a - T2 - 0.109" (7/64" or 2.78mm)
2 - 03 - 0.125" (1/8" or 3.18mm)
2.5 -T3 - 0.156" (5/32" or 3.97mm)

I have also posted this on HSM!

Many thanks!
Dennis

Dennis,

So long as the tool tip is realigned on the centre line, I see no problems.
Also make sure the screw fixing the insert is properly secure. ie not too short.

Thanks for the input Dave.

For the benefit of other members, a post on HSM indicated that unless I were prepared to modify the insert pocket on the toolholder (tricky!) I should stick to this uncommon insert size!
Seehttp://bbs.homeshopmachinist.net/showthread.php?t=47714

The learning for me is to check when buying toolholders - these are US-made and the size of the CCMT inserts was given in ANSI (31.51) and I assumed that they would be a common size! I won't make this mistake again.

The good news is that I managed to get some on Fleabay for $3 each which will serve for a long time, as I have other toolholders and HSS tooling for the Student.
