Inside out turning

Hi all, thought I would have a go at posting a thread, please bear with me, I'm not too good at juggling my camera whilst making something  

Right, I thought I would have a go at a bit of inside out turning. The idea is you turn a fancy shape on the outside then turn it inside out and then turn a fancy shape on the new outside. So basically when your done you have a piece that you can look into and see a fancy machined surface that would be normally impossible to machine from solid   It will all soon become clear, I hope  

Anyway this is my attempt  

I started with 4 pieces of 1/4" brass square bar



Then all four pieces are then super glued (along with my fingers ) they could soldered together for a bit more security



Once all stuck together I then clocked it up in the 4 jaw chuck



Machined a basic sort of contour on the outside with a radius tool



Out of chuck and in to the thinners to soften the glue, Hey presto four bits



Now turn them inside out and solder together and like magic its whole again  



Back to the lathe and clocked in the good old 4 jaw  



Machining the new outside, nothing too fancy (pretty uninspiring really)



There you have it, a inside out turned piece of brass  













Here's my first attempt, all going well and then I got a bit cocky and .......

crunch  


Anyway hope you found this thread of some interest. I'm currently building a stationary steam engine, its sort of a commision job for a mate and I fancied a change from the solid supports and decided to go for something a bit different.

I'm going to have to try this someday now. (even if it does involve the 4 jaw!)  The good bit.... I know where to find the write up for reference

I haven't given it any deep thought but someone should examine what's possible with three pieces of hex stock.

i'm very impressed at the super glue holding with the centre in. I'd have been putting something around the end to support it.

out of interest, we used to do a job at work that had to "glued" together, when this hugely expensive "glue" was used, it was as strong as a weld!

Hi Rob, I believe I've seen reference to that technique before and quite forgot it, but it looks like it would make some very nice pillars for an engine, and one could easily make some pretty intricate machine work before turning it inside out, and then do some complementary work after it is reassembled inside out, and have some very interesting looking posts and pillars, with careful soldering, almost invisible as to how it was done.  I am going to have to try it just so I don't forget what you've done us the favor of showing can be done.   Cheers, Jack

Interesting indeed, I could never get the sections to line up properly but then I was using wood and as we all know wood warps!
