PeterE - A simple headstock dividing attachement
« on: July 14, 2011, 07:17:53 AM »
After having used my SIEG C3 mini lathe for a while, I started to follow the upgrade/attachement series in the Model Engineers Workshop mag. A really nice series which I believe became a book a little later on.

Starting out with the simpler trimmings and adjustments, I soon came to the point to start making new bits and pieces. A headstock dividing atachement was one of the first and for the next parts necessary attachment. Having studied the MEW article on this for some days, I decided to make one, but with a few mods of course  :med:

The way the described attachment was designed it would be a little fiddly to attach I thought, mostly due to the number of items to assemble. So a simpler way of holding the detent should be made. My choice became  a console made from a piece of sturdy angle iron bar in the range of 60x60x5 mm or so held by two thumb screws in the existing cover holes. (In reality, my piece came out of a 120x120x12 T-bar  :bugeye:). Some chain drilling and hacksawing later I had a nice chunk to smoothen in my mini-mill.

The gear holder was made according to the drawings apart from that I made the securing nut into a large thumb screw  to allow thumping it loose with the palm of my hand. I also made a small T-shaped key to really fix the gear position as it turned out that the gear could slip even if it was a stiff sliding fit to the arbor.

The detent arrangement was made using ideqas out of the GH Thomas' book Workshop Techniques in which the dividing appliances were described. It was also a good way to make the detent as all the parts were turned. To make it possible to run the lathe even with the detent mounted, I made a hold-out clip that is held in palce by countersinks that fit the knob and the body.

These are the bits:

From top left - the console, the detent and the hold-out. Next row shows the gear and arbor, and the two attachement thumb screws.

If we turn the console to show the back, there is a milled out recess to make room for the upper left screw holding the back plate of the headstock bearings.

Assembly is as follows:

1 - Attach the console with the two thumb screws.

2 - Attach the gear to the spindle.

3 - Attach the detent to the console.

4 - Insert the hold-out so that the spindle can be set for the first mark.

This turned in to an easily attached/removed device which still is really rigid.

Now it is off and away to the next project.

That is a very neat and effective mod, and one that is going on the list  :proj:

Thanks for showing it.

Very nice work Peter.
I presume that the three sets of fixing holes are for three different Change Wheels.
What tooth numbered wheels did you fix on and why?
Many thanks for pointing me at this thread.

Quite correct John, the three sets of fixing holes are for 45/50, 60, and one larger gear, but I suspect that it will be the 50 (on the pic) and the 60 that will be the most common ones. I did them as separate holes to avoid sliding if I miss securing the thumb screws and it also adds to rigidity as well. In fact, the holes are 5,5 mm to guide the countersink and the screw hole is M5 so the thumb screw has a shoulder to guide the console properly.

Many thanks for your reply Peter.
Is the Detent housing in two pieces to enable a spring to be fitted and where is the join?
Sorry about all these questions but I find this design very interesting.

John

I think the easiest will be to show a picture of the dis-assembled detent.

From left to right:
The housing is made from a dia 20mm brass. The thread is M12x1 to fit to the console and the hole is 8mm drilled for about 90% of the length. Then the hole through is just 4 mm to pass the stem of the detent through.

The detent is made from a piece of 8mm mild steel with a filed screw driver type edge to fit the gears.

The spring is a part of a longer one I found in the scrap box, hence the man-handled look

The top button holding it all together is lying upside down to show the M3x4 grub screw.

Finally, the hold-out conically countersunk on both sides and milled out to be able to attach it without having to part the whole thing.

Hope this helps.

Well, my camera is a very old Nikon 2100 pocket camera run in still picture mode without any other adjustments. Then after taking the pic I crop it in my very simple picture tool delivered together with the Nero CD burning program.

Nice to hear that you like  the design and I hope you will show pics as you go along.

Hello Peter,
I've also got a Nikon (a D70S) which the lads bought me when I retired ( well some of it - I paid the rest!)
I'm now looking through my material store (the wife calls it Junk) for a suitable bit of angle iron.
I'll certainly post the progress if I get that far.
Regards,
John

That's a crackin' bit of kit!

Very well thought through, and made into a neat, purposeful assembly.......

Thank you Pete and David D for your nice comments!

I think I missed one detail though  :bugeye: When creating scales and dials I will need some sort of "depth guide" to limit the lengths of the scribed lines. I havea seen a number of solutions hmmm   :coffee:. I will be back with some more later on.

Hi Peter,

The attachment looks great

As to scribing dial lines to length (or different lengths for units, 5s and 10s) I made up a super-crude device shown in the bottom third of this page http://andysmachines.weebly.com/miscellaneous.html . It worked very well.

Mike Burdick's method is worth a look, if you haven't already seen it. There's a link to it on my page.

Thanks Andy!

I will include your scribing tips in my thinking and see what I can make up.

Very nice, just what I've been looking for.  Thanks for showing.  :headbang:
BTW, Hemingway has a kit\plans for a line scribing attachment.

Thanks Chazz and Rob!

I have also thought about the scribing tool from Hemingway, but it will have to wait for some time yet, and also, at least for me, the first dials I have to make are for handwheels and the like, and with a little assistance of the right gadget they can be cut using just a threading tool sideways in the tool post. So at first I am aiming for that gadget
