Heyup!
« on: December 12, 2008, 12:17:41 PM »
Hello!
I`m David, from NE. Derbyshire. UK.

Some 5-6 yrs ago, heading towards retirement, I realised I would never ride a motorcycle again, due to worsening arthritis.
So, I sold my `69 Bonneville retirement project & bought a load of small steam & hot air engines, plus Chester Conquest lathe for workshop duties.

I retired from rock drilling manufacturing in 2006, intending to watch the wheels go round...... Hmmmm.....

When does the "important" work ease, so the serious play can begin?

I enjoy modifying my engines, and making odds & ends out of bits & pieces.

I recently assembled a flamelicker kit. But it`s too cold at the moment to have a good play in the workshop.

This looks like a nice forum for inspiration, and hopefully some warmer weather......

David.

Still drilling holes... Sometimes, in the right place!

Still modifying bits of metal... Occasionally, making an improvement!

Hey and a WARM welcome to ya David.

Glad you signed up. Much fun here with the different subjects.

OK, I've got to ask. Seems like you guys in the UK don't install heaters in your shops. I've seen it mentioned on the forums and I've read it in the model magazines. What gives?

Oh, by the way  :mmr:

Regards,
Bernd

Hi Bernd, thanks for the warm welcome!

First post was a bit scarey. Take a deep breath, and see what happens......

Heating my workshop / garage? Do you know the cost of power in the UK?  ::)

Frankly I`m more concerned with machinery sweating & rusting, if I heat when necessary.

At only 3dgrs daytime recently, my fingers seize on cold machine handles, and my toes hate concrete floors......

Will we have a summer next year I wonder?

Hey David!

Welcome to the club. Never worry about first posts here... or 50th or even 500th. We are a bunch of nice guys. I won't tolerate flaming at all.

It gets cold here too. I went out and bought a kerosene heater for when it is too nippy.

Anyways... show us what you got! Pictures are a requirement  :D

Eric
Science is fun.

We're all mad here. I'm mad. You're mad.

David,

A big welcome to you. I am in the same sort of position as yourself, but I can still manage to get on my cruiser for a few hours out in the fresh air.

You are not too far away from me (Crewe), so if ever you need a few hours out, I am usually in for visitors.

Just a note Eric, I don't want to teach you how to suck eggs, but burnt paraffin and workshops don't mix, it produces copious amounts of water vapour, hence gardeners use them in greenhouses. You are much better off buying a permanently running oil filled radiator to keep the chill away, when up to temperature, they only cost pennies an hour to run. When my shop is eventually finished, I will have one tucked away somewhere, and let the froststat keep the chills away, and prevent rusting on the machines.

Hi David, nice of you to pop in mate

Due to many years of making / mending things in a cold damp garage, earlier this year I emptied my little (and I do mean little  ::) ) workshop and put in insulation all round, unfortunately progress recently has been slow due to all sorts of other pressures ............ but hopefully, in time I'll get there  :headbang:

Hi David,

Welcome to the only place on the webternet that caters for all makers of all sorts..... and is FRIENDLY  :D

As said....  :mmr:

Now, down to business.... Pictures, information and good conversation is required (the later is not obligatory! just general banter will do  :) )

Glad to know people are willing to join in

Bernd,

Heaters smeters! I'm alright jack!

Just wear 4/5 layers and your toastie.... Oh maybe a hat and some ear warmers too!

Must say I was very unhappy to find the condensation had dripped onto my mill table yesterday and developed into light rust spots!!!!!!!!!!!  :bugeye:
A light polishing with wire wool and a re-apply of oil + a covering with oiled rags should keep that at bay!?!

I have no heater...used to but it would just never turn off in my shop as it is attatched to the garage and that provides generally constant air flow!!

One day when I build a real big shop I'll have it insulated and heated.... It'll be my little piece of paradise :)

Well I feel I've waffled enough!!! ("Oh yes" they say!)

Going to go out and visit my cold little shop now, I have some thinking to do and that's the best place to do it

Ralph.

P.s. I started this post before Bog's and CC.... How slow am I !!??

Welcome David,

Come and join in the fun....it's great in 'ere

cold workshop in the UK Bernd, quite normal, hard enough to heat the house  :coffee: has to suffice mostly.
You will find it a distinct help… if you know and look as if you know what you are doing. (IRS training manual)

Gale force 10 here, it must be those mountains stopping it blowing your way Darren.

It nearly blew me over coming in from the shop.

Thanks, all....... Hey! What a crackin` welcome!
I`m going to enjoy myself here.

Very wet and windy this morning, in NE Derbyshire.
Unfortunately, my problem is not body cold..... It`s mainly me arthritic digits......
Certainly not crippled, yet, but well into the grumbling stage.

You like pics?
Here are a couple of xrays of my modified left big toe & joint.
The right one is very similar!
Make sure your last meal has settled....  ::)

On a much lighter note..... John Boggy may remember this....

And for the older bike buffs, from 1967. The ultimate mod....

It all started when a pal said, "I`ve bought a garage, for £36, it`s got some old bikes  in it".

Love the Norton. That engine is one of the best looking aircooled engines out there.

Dave,

I remember the engine very vaguely, my memory lapses at times, if I remember it was on a toy engine site I once frequented.

Surely that other one isn't a 'vinnie' shoehorned into a featherbed, or is it a wideline?

Yes John,
Re. Mamod triple, you gave me some help & ideas for the exhaust system.

The Norvin was a 1949(?) well tweaked, HRD Vincent engine, in a complete Manx Norton of the same vintage.
Genuinely too fast for owner........ Not me....... Unfortunately...... ::)
