What can I make from this?
« on: December 14, 2008, 11:17:15 AM »
Wife says to me "I have some steel, do you want it?" I say yes.

Yesterday she came home with it in the boot (dam, you guys are getting me to talk the Queens English. That's trunk for us US of A guys ) of her car. I just about had a hernia lifting the so called steel out. Once I get a better look at it I found out it wasn't steel. It was a chunk of cast iron. :jaw:

Here's a pic of it.

53 pounds of a nearly cube piece of cast iron. 6 X 5 3/4 X 5 7/8 inches.

My thought is that it'll will make good cast iron cylinders. I'll use a carbide slitting saw and cut chunks from it. What say ye all?

Bernd,

That bit of scrap iron is no use to you at all, if you send it to me, postage paid, I suppose I could make use of it somewhere.

Can you just tell me what part of your body the sun shines out of.

What a great chunk of iron.  :headbang: :headbang:

It would have loads of uses round a machine shop, scrape one side up and use it for marking out plate. Drill and tap a load of holes in another side and use it for clamping things down for machining, and when you not useing it just use it for keeping the door open with it.

But what ever you do with it have fun

Cheers

Just a suggestion for the next time you have to move that thing.  A couple of good C-clamps make a good handle.  The weight isn't so bad as just trying to get a hold of it.

Nice catch!   I just get a box of brushes and a lump of coal for my stocking this year. :(

I like a couple of your ideas. Trouble is I'd want to frill it all full of holes just to make it lighter. :)

Hey I like that idea with the clamps. It is sort of unhandy to handle. Now all I need to do is find a clamp that will open that far.

You should have seen the stocking that piece was in. :bugeye: Hey coal is good. You can use it to keep warm or crush it to smaller pieces and use it in a steam boiler.

Ok Bernd, we have a fair exchange here, I will send you a lump of coal, you send me the block of cast. You will stay warm, I will make dozens of little engines.

First thing i though when i saw that lump of cast iron was key ring tabs.

Just cut it up with you saw into 1/8" thick slices about 1" square and make dog tags out of them.

Should keep you busy for a few nights

Ok I've been thinking about this. :med: And your right fair exchange. But first I'll need to drill some holes in it to make it lighter. I don't want you hurting yourself picking it up.  :D :D

And on that note mine came home with an Evolution Fury Cut off saw today......

"got something for you in the car luv, you were on about getting one the other week"

See, sometimes they do listen to our drivel.... :) Just forgot I've bought other saws since then !!
(note to oneself :- keep mouth firmly shut and be very grateful)

Mind you they do as they say, cut that SS bar like butter, 50x10mm that bar is and it went though it like a piece of wood.

You will find it a distinct help… if you know and look as if you know what you are doing. (IRS training manual)
