Victor lathe: what is this part for?
« on: June 09, 2011, 01:30:42 PM »
I have a very old Victor lathe. Works great and I love it. There is a set of gears behind the headstock on a pivot. The two gears will engage gears on the spindle. I use it to lock the spindle if I need it to stay stationary but it seems like it should do something else. I have a video of it I will try to post. Any ideas?

Hi KB3RLJ

More than likely Back gear  :dremel:      ,,,,,, reduces the spindle RPM's

I thought that too but the lathe won't run with it engaged. Its completely locked up. That's what I use it for but seems complicated for that purpose. Wonder what else I have to do to drive it if its a back gear?

It will lock up ,,,,,,,,,look for something that allows the pulleys to run free ,,,,,, small latch or key

I found it! There is a square head screw that locks the chuck to the spindle. Once I loosened that the chuck spun free. Engaging that back gear now cuts the speed way down. Thanks guys. I've learned something new today!  :nrocks:
