Motor Bike + Ducted Radial Fans = HoverBike...?
« on: June 11, 2011, 08:50:08 AM »

Ever have one of those boyhood dreams that said 'I want one...!'

For those of you that enjoy the individual that goes out and just starts building some, gets the early prototype part way completed identifies and learns from his mistakes and starts into the next prototype, then this hover bike project may be for you.

I don't know the guy and I'm not affiliated with him in any way but I did find the concept interesting and well presented.

Very interesting Kenneth.

I will admit, this is a project I have had in mind for several years. It is one of those 'as soon as my shop improves' ideas.

Nice to see you back Kennth.

Interesting concept. I'd be a little scared to ride one of these knowing other are out there too. They'd be running into each other if this type of transportation ever got popular. People have trouble driving in two dimensions. Can you imagine them trying to drive in a three dimensional plane?

I do hope it takes off (pun intended) though.

I have plans for a hover craft using two engines. One for upward thrust and one for forward. It's another "round-tuit" project.  :med:

Well, magic keeps Harry Potter on top of his broomstick, but on a device like that I'd be worried that with the  weight of a muggle like me sitting on top, the thing might invert and head groundwards under power-assisted gravity.

I've cut the end off it twice, but it's still too short

Andy, I believe the most effective method for keeping the craft upright would be to attach a piece of buttered toast with the buttered side facing down to the top of the bike. Everyone knows that if you drop a piece it will ALWAYS land butter side down.

On a serious note I do like the look of the thing. It's just that it looks very unstable to me. Though I am rooting for him, it would be one heck of an accomplishment. If he can make it work the world will beat a path to his door.

I want one! How would I get that insured? Aircraft or motorcycle? Once the agent gets his jaw off the floor I'll ask him.  :zap:

Since it surely must use ground-effect to keep a cositant hover height I wonder how they would cope with un-even surfaces? It's an ambitious project for sure but I think it'll be a long time before those tethers come off.

You must have missed the part about hovering out of ground effect at 10,000 feet altitude!

Well, that's not a hoverbike then - it's a helicopter!

Interesting, very interesting.... I'd prefer to have 4 smaller rotors though, ideally slightly angled away from each other to improve stability. Sort of like these quadrocopters:

PS: If you ever wondered what would populate the earth post-humans? I think we're seeing it now...
Cheers!

Sounds like a bunch of bee's.

Could this planet have been populated by the machine first? Interesting question.

What came first the human or the machine?
