Happy Birthday Stew

I bet you always had a crappy birthday when you were a kid, because everyone would give you a combined Christmas/Bithday present.

But getting back to the present, mine is still sitting outside from when it was delivered, so anything you can suggest will be welcome.

Would make a great magnifier for machine work with a new mount set up. What ever you do with it have fun.

Nice!!!.... What's it do?? Make things bigger?

Whatever it does... I'd always try to get it working Stew... it could come in really useful.... Did John want to make it into engines??  :D

I missed your Birthday so belated ...HAPPY BIRTHDAY!!!!! I've been busy with the usual festive stuff.... plus this damn manflu's still got it's teeth in me.... Pulled a muscle in my neck last week coughing!!!

Anyhoo... I digress.... What did you get from your 'birthday santa' then Stew?

So who knows what Johns unusually large prezzie is then....? Has he told us?? (My memory is crap!)

60's not that old anymore apparently? My dad's 61 in Feb' and he's.... Well ok, it's pretty old  :)

Seriously... He's still working his rear off modifying the house, as well as a full time job with 200mile comute every monday and friday!!!  I don't think I could do that at my age!!!!!

Well that's it for this post of mine... Except.... Yes.... Fix it!

Ralph,

John didn't want to turn it into little engines, John has got one of his own that he can do that with.

They are production scopes (Dynascopes), put an item under the lens and it magnifies (variable magnification) it up onto a little screen. The lens has it's own lighting system (the curved bits are fibre optic cables that feed light down to the lens head).

My mate rescued two of them out of a skip at work, surplus to requirements. The damage was caused by the dropping into a skip.

As for the scope powered up the screen and it worked OK havn't tried the lighting yet its got funny plugs the type you get on computers I suppose I could wire up ordinary three pins ??.

Hi Stew, Is it an IEC 3 pin socket on the machine needing a plug and lead?

If so I have hundreds of the little B*****s and could pop one in the post for you if it would help?

You will find it a distinct help… if you know and look as if you know what you are doing. (IRS training manual)

Was just thinking of your liking to recycling John....  :dremel:

Sounds like a fun little gadget.... I'll have to have a closer look when I get rid of this manflu and can come visit!

Stew,

Sounds like you are going for the upgrade... I can never understand the huge difference in price of these machines.... They all look very, very similar.... I would like to think it meant that they had spent more time refining them. But I think I might be dissapointed!

Good luck in the world of machinery sales..... They can be a real pain in the rear (ask John!!)

Ralph,

I have just spent the last six months getting rid of a lot of my unused recycled bits. So now, there has to be some real heavyweight material in the bits before I start to knock them apart, otherwise I will just end up as I was before, unable to move because of storing 'just might come in handy' parts.

The lights might be useful (you see, I'm at it again), for pinpoint illumination on a machine, but usually with very expensive stuff like this, they have custom bulbs that are hard to replace if they blow, so I will wait until Stew has decided what he is going to do with his, and if he needs spare bulbs he can have the ones out of mine.

But it really is a shame to throw away things like this, that would have cost a couple of grand each to buy in the first place.

Stew,

Get one of the bulbs out first and find it's voltage rating, you wouldn't want to go plugging say 24 volts into 240 volt mains. With the type of plugs on there, they should be 240 volts, but it always better to be on the safe side and check first.

Stew,

Check to see if you have bulbs in there, I did the other evening, and both of mine were missing. But by the looks of the mount, they are standard two pin halogens, I just might have a few knocking about. Finding them is the problem, now that I have had a clean up.

One phone call later, and a bit more info on the bulbs.

The leads plug into a transformer that supplies 12 volts.

The bulbs as I suspected are two pin halogens, as in projector bulbs. 12 volt 75 watt.

No transformers available (not yet anyway).

The sockets for those have been standard on computers for quite some time now.  Find the computer repair place near you, and ask for some dead power supplies.  Bash them open, and take the socket out.

Or, you could cheat and go to a computer parts website and order some.
