My youngest granson is 3 tomorrow

He has a great interest in mechanical things
I have been trying to talk the wife in to buying him a mini lathe
I said i would look after it for him untill he is a "bit" older

Can any of you lads see a problem with this

From what i have read it will take me a while to iron out its shortcomings

That should not be a problem. Just make sure that you buy the best quality lathe that is on the market and one that won't be outdated in 15 years. After all you don't want it to be worn out when you finally give it to him, do you.

Haha, good thinking John! My grandad gave me his lathe when I was 13, so only 10 years to wait not 15! It was an old ML7 - stupidly I sold it for £325, but that's another story

Yes, I totally agree.

My daughter is 2 1/2 years old and I am constantly asking my wife to invest in a suitable small watch or clockmakers lathe like the Cowells CW90 or perhaps a 8mm collet Lorch.

Not getting anywhere so far but good to see others with the same idea.

I was looking at a 3 1/2" gauge loco for my sons the other day - got one but it needs a lot of work ... I claimed they need something now or will lose interest! Not getting far either ...
