conquest layshaft removal
« on: August 07, 2011, 09:59:04 PM »
can anyone tell me how to remove the layshaft  from the head casing  on a conquest ? ive removed the circlips at either end but its still stuck fast and im afraid of damaging the small bearings if i force it..I'm trying to change to taper bearings on the spindle and metal hi/lo gears at the same time
but i'm stuck at getting the old busted plastic gears out first..any advice would be greatly appreciated...:bang:

i just knocked mine out with a pin punch from the "chuck" end.
i reused the bearings as it took very little effort to remove them
if i'd thought it through, i'd have never tried it

Hi Mike.
I've never removed a Mini lathe shaft. But the mill is "the same"......

I removed the circlip, and just tapped it through/ out with a piece of brass bar, from the opposite end. Same as Jim!

great!!! that worked a treat, gents thanks again...

and some gentle coaxing with a hammer and wooden wedge removed the larger bearing that was still on the chuck end of the main spindle..

now to rebuild!! I just hope its as easy as they make it look on U-tube..I think i might be being a bit optomistic there... :zap:

Are you rebuilding with taper rollerbearings?

When I went the belt conversion route, I changed the stock bearings for tapers...found the machine much quieter and smoother..

There is a very detailed how to do it here :-

And yes, it is worth making the effort.

Ah yes Ian, it shows you all the completed steps but I'm totally new to this and needed  to know all the actual nitty gritty of how to do each step, and photo 13 shows a washer set up thats not in the chester lathe i have and also photo 15,that washer is different too,but my main problem was i was wanting to change the hi/lo gears to metal while i was doing the bearings and that involved taking out the layshaft which is'nt mentioned in the arc euro photo board as its not nessessary when just doing the bearings,, but i got there in the end with some help from David and Jim, and it seems to be running fine again with a low gear once more(yippee!)

so thanks again guys, as it would'nt even have been attempted if i was'nt able to call on you all for help when i got into trouble... :mmr:
