Model Steam Engine "Standard Details"
« on: September 25, 2011, 12:16:55 PM »
Hi Folks,

Now then,.... I've acquired a cast iron cylinder casting which I would like to use to make a horizontal type Mill Engine. There is enough meat in it for about 3/4" bore X 1 1/4" stroke. I'm fairly sure that I can work out all the relevant dimensions, well if you don't try you'll never learn!

Although I know the basics, I would like to make it look as if it had been properly "engineered".

So, can anyone point me in the right direction for a book which offers various designs for piston rod glands, connecting rods, bearing standards, eccentric sheaves, and possibly reversing gears such as Stevensons Link?

Thanks in advance

Think I'm suffering De Ja Vu and Amnesia at the same time, I'm sure I've forgotten this before!

If you look here, there are a large number of engravings that can be used as a guide.

An example is the bottle engine I am currently working on.

I have used the engravings to try and get the authentic "look and feel" of a steam engine, whatever that may be.

Next step is to make patterns, build a furnace, and cast the engine.

Good luck to you.
