Cap bolt question
« on: November 19, 2011, 11:12:37 AM »
What size hole do I need to drill to clear the head of an M10 cap head bolt? I'm drilling into the under section of my sump, and I want to countersink the bolts nice & deep, so they don't get in the way of anything, and to reduce the temptation to remove them... (I may plug the holes once the bolts are in)

Thing is, I don't have any M10 cap-head bolts yet... & can't get any until Monday, so I can't measure myself...

Thanks in advance!  :nrocks:
Cheers!

Solidworks uses a 10.0mm diameter hole, by 18.0mm deep as standard clearance  for a 10mm S.H.C.S.

AdeV,

I measure with my trusty calipers, the head is 16.12 mm dia by 9.90mm high..

Best to measure your screws as they do vary from the proper BS spec as you can see by comparing your sizes with the following.

There's a table here, Ade, which indicates that a 16mm dia x 10mm deep counterbore should be OK for M10. If the bolt heads are a mite too big when you get them, you could always turn them down to fit.

I've cut the end off it twice, but it's still too short

Excellent, thanks chaps. I'll make the holes 16mm for now & either enlarge them or turn down the bolts if they won't fit.

Look out for some sump progress tonight  :)
Cheers!

G-Wizard says 17.5x10 countersink.  Head diameter is 16.

So is this bolt a countersunk head or is it a standard cap head that requires a counterbore ?

Um, I suspect you're right John, I need a counterbore to hold the cap-head of the bolt...

Damn these pesky machining terms. Look, I need a hole, that's big enough for the head to go into, but not all the way through.... the upright section is drilled 10mm clearance, the sump itself is drilled 8.5mm tapping (& then tapped m10) to take the cap-head bolt, that.... you get the picture...

Anyway, a new sump post will be coming right up... just got to fettle the pictures & write the text.
Cheers!

John, your cap-head bolts measured exactly the same as mine: 16.12mm...

Predictably, my 16mm milling cutter cut a dead accurate 16mm hole... so the heads wouldn't fit. Rather than adjust the main sump, I just turned a few thou off each cap head (as suggested by Andy) so it fitted nicely, job done! I should probably put some kind of rust-proofing on it, if I can be bothered...
Cheers!
