I have an Issue.
« on: December 16, 2011, 10:36:57 AM »
Hello,

Yep I do, I would like to respectfully ask some of you to stop taking over the OP post. It seems to be happening more and more.

Some of the OP are quite new to machining, and when their post goes off at tangent, I’m sure they must feel utterly lost.

Have a thought for the OP, think where the question is coming from, read the question and if you can answer it, but PLEASE let us not answer our own questions.

If you have something to say – great, -  (I for one will read it) start a new post.

I agree to a point, but isn't this part of human nature as well?

Just think about how a conversation goes when people get together and chat.  They wander from topic to topic, sometimes coming back full circle to what they started talking about.

I think different people have different ideas about what "related" is, and something that doesn't seem to be on topic at first might just spark some ideas to help the "OP" out with their "OT" (creative license: "original topic", as opposed to "off topic").

Some of the threads that start out with a question that could be answered with Google and 30 seconds of any computer illiterate person's time actually get more interesting as they go farther and farther off topic.

There are definitely limits to this logic, but this is one of the best forums I've ever found to find threads that DO stay on topic and do so in a very respectful manner.  I don't think I've even once seen the acronyms "GIYF" or "RTFM" here, although it may be tempting from time to time, sometimes even warranted.

That reminds me of a great recipe for pumpkin pie that I thought you'd all enjoy:

2 cups pumpkin
3 eggs

I`ve never had pumpkin pie but I do love slow cooked steak pie - large stake skirt cut into small pieces, slow cooker with a bit of gravy mix and browning with a large finely chopped onion. 6 hours and then put it in the oven with a puff pastry topping.

Ahh.... I was thinking up all sorts of other phrases to fit them (got a few unprintable ones, lots of little asterisk's  )

Just assumed that if they came from some of those other IMHO horrible forums that they would be very caustic!?

Just to add to the other element of the thread..... Pumpkin pie? Why? Pies should have nice fillings.... Steak, chicken, custard.........
 (I'm 98% carnivore BTW  )

even more :offtopic:

What's this about pies? the only way I can conceive a connection between OP (= Theakston's "Old Peculier") and pies is maybe using OP in a steak & ale pie? - but I'd rather just drink it!  cheers

The only thing before this that I know of called OP is an old Swedish aqua vitae or schnaps called OP Anderssons´s.

A very tasty drink flavoured with cumin, aniseed, and fennel.  Yummy!

Cheers

Back to seriousness.

Topic wandering. Happens on message boards as it does in real life. Can we stop it? Do we want to stop it? More than once a question is asked, it gets answered but because of the way the thread goes, we learn something else. Sometimes it wanders so far off topic that we get lost.

So where do we draw the line? What I may see as staying on topic someone may see as off topic. Or vice versa.

Should the OP (original poster) step in on their own thread and steer it back? Is that the moderators responsibility?

What do people think? What is YOUR opinion??

Eric
