Support brackets for race car wing
« on: March 16, 2012, 04:28:47 PM »
This barely merits a project post, but as I had a bit of a hurdle to overcome, I figured I'd post here. It definitely isn't quality enough for a "how to" post...

Anyhoo...

As part of the on-going race car project, we are building a new rear wing (bought ones are silly expensive). It's a simple thing: 4 aluminium supports, 2 lengths of 5ft ali tube, wrapped with ali sheet & all welded together.

As I have some big lumps of ali lying around, a suitably sized chunk was chosen. A wing was roughly drawn on it, bandsawed out, and partly tidied up on the mill. Next job was to cut a 1" hole in the wing part, so the tube can be pushed through. This raised a bit of a problem; I have cutters going up to 25mm on the mill, but that's not quite enough to get 1" OD pipe through. I really didn't want to turn .54mm off 5ft of 1" ali tube, but the only tools I have capable of cutting 1" or more have 3MT arbors on them. The only adaper I have is R8 to MT2...

How to cut the hole...?

    :palm: :smart:

Simples! Mount it on a faceplate on the lathe, and finish off to diameter with a reamer (I have 3 1" reamers...):

Dial in about 100rpm, add a generous squirt of WD40, and feed in at a comfortable rate. Job done!

Thank goodness for big machines!
Cheers!

Nice! Now lets see the race car!

Horsepower determines how fast you hit the wall. Torque determines the size of the hole you make.

Hi
Ade
Oulton Park spent many happy weekends there
I remember Croft 30 years ago there was a hut that sold beer & pies
Nothing like the facilities now
What class do you race in

Aye, you're not wrong there.... the hut blew away!

Actually, in fairness, I haven't seen Croft for a while, they might have improved it by now.

We (Dad & I) race in a class called "Modified Sports Cars" - they have to be roughly based on a production vehicle, but can be pretty well modified in every way. There are certain restrictions, e.g. the body shape above the wheel centre line must be recognisable. The championship is sponsored by CNC Heads, a company in Stockport who make, surprise surprise, engine heads. With CNC machines... My old Capri had the prototype of his Essex 3ltr aluminium head, although that was cast & then manually machined.

There's a picture of the car here (for those who haven't seen it): http://madmodder.net/index.php?topic=2726.0

This year, the snowplough will be somewhat less extreme, as will the rear wing (it's not obvious from that photo, it's insanely downforcey - far too much so, in fact). I'll take a few snapshots on Saturday & post them up in the Gallery.

Unfortunately, we're not going to Cadwell this year, otherwise I'd be able to grab a picture of the sump during the race.... should be possible to make the car jump @ Mountain  :bugeye:
Cheers!

PS: There wasn't much (ahem: any) machining involved, but I like it anyway.... we carry it around in this:

And from back in the good ol' days, when we had a car each...

Mine went on the trailer as it was too fat to fit though the door of the bus.... much like it's driver!
Cheers!

Nice comment about the regulations ....they have to be roughly based on a production vehicle ...

That sounds very much like in Sweden.  My neighbour across the street does a fair bit of standard car racing (standard, my foot  :bugeye:) It started as a Volvo 240 but now with interior missing, drivers seat moved back for better balance, Road clearance of about an inch as it looks and a good 300+ hp "lightly" modified Volvo 5 cylinder engine ...

According to him even the Porsches have trouble keeping the pace

You must take pic of your car when you can.
