Tube Square
« on: March 23, 2012, 05:13:30 PM »
A couple of years ago Bogs posted a thread, Precision Tool From Junk,  on how to make a tube or circular square from a piece of pipe. Today I made one to use in resetting the table on my pillar drill after it had been disturbed. The tool worked a treat but as I was getting a wrench (spanner) from my tool box I noticed a shiny, new, 17mm deep socket. On a hunch I set it along the test piece that was in the drill chuck. Prefect replacement for the tool Bogs had described. I only chose the 17mm socket as it was still new. I am sure almost any size would work as well.

Hi
Joe
IC Engine gudion pins are dead square
A engine repair shop should be able to fix you up
Your sockett will have been CNC machined so it should be spot on
Old bearing races are very usefull as well

John, You sent me to Wikipedia on that one! Gudion (actually Gudgeon) pins are what us Yanks call wrist pins. Again our common language divides us.

I keep a piece of hefty ground bar for setting up chucks, measuring runout etc. - about 8" of 2" bar, still shiny! I needed to check the quill/table sqareness of a mill, so indicated the bar in the 4-jaw (at two distances from the jaws to be sure it was concentric), faced the end square and - important - recessed all but the outer 1/8" so it *couldn't* be convex - ran a "tenth" DTI mounted in the drill chuck down it and went and found some shims for the column foot and the forklift to hold the head... Shouldn't have bothered!

It now has my initials stamped in the recess, to keep it in the workshop!
