Some pics of my race car..
« on: April 23, 2012, 03:09:04 PM »
I have not been very active of late.. but I figured some of the memvbers might like to see what I have been applying what I have been learning from the board against.

THis is my 1984 RX-7. It was originally a Improved Touring class car.
Improved Touring means improving the safety.. and SOME items of the car.
Strip all the interior except for the dash and controls. carpet, rear seats, door panels (if you have door bars in your cage)
roll cage
fuel cell
larger fuel lines
large fuilter and 140 gph fuel pump
exhaust.. unrestricted.. but must have a muffler and exit behind the driver
no emissions controls
race air cleaner
radiator and oil cooler are much larger
engine can be rebuilt to factory specs.. inclusing overbores if applicable within the factory specs.
Brakes..... Pads unrestricted. Must maintain factory calipers, spindles hubs etc.
shocks.. must maintain original strut, but can replace it with a factory replacement racing strut.. like Koni Penske etc.
springs unrestricted in original mounting location.
camber caster plates replace top strut perch
bushings unrestricted in original mounting location..

You get the point. Upgrading some of te things.. make it handle muuuuuch better.

Mine is transforming to something stronger...
I have removed the factory brakes and gone much larger. Also from 13" to 15" wheels.

I am in process of getting readyt to assemble a 600+ horsepower dry sump engine.. to replace the 120 is hp engine in it now....

This is over the weekend.. in NC for a Rotary Car Club event called Deals Gap Rotary Rally. Basically 11 miles of road with 318 turns. Picture space mountain at Disney.. in a car. No turn offs no side roads.. no houses nothing. It was an Apache indian trail in the past.. that they paved.

LOT of fun...

Had a gen1 RX-7 for a short time... what a fun car that was. It would rev forever! Couldn't imagine one with 600HP!! insanity!

Are you going to do a build thread? nudge nudge  :poke:

That's rather good - you'll love the more powerful engine! Is yours still road legal, then? Mine isn't....

I'll post a pickkie of mine tomorrow, all the photos are at the office....
Cheers!

Zoom Zoom!!! Nice:o)
Wesley P
A Gismo ??? If it has a flywheel or spins and is made with small parts. I'll take one! If it makes noise, moves, or requires frequent oiling and dusting it's a better deal yet. It's especially right if its shiny and bright; but if it's dirty and dull it wont mater at all...

Yeppers  Still street legal. :)

And yes I have taken a incredible volume of pics for the brake conversion.. I can pop up a thread on the conversion. I am still in recovery mode.. long weekend of driving. It was a 8 hour drive that takes 12, as my crew cab turbo diesel dually slows down a LOT in the hills and ultra tight turns getting to the mountains. As the week progresses, I will gather things up and make a thread.

See thats the fun part....... NO Turbo.

16,500 redline
The engine was in a 67 Lola F1 chassis, that was used for Chimney Rock Hillclimb. Wings the works.. and 4 wheel steering.
It has a 6 barrel progressive throttle body, and fuel injection.. and some still to this day, radical porting on it. Its actually the ONLY engine I have ever seen with this level of porting.

Hi Scott

Welcome back

So, just to get things straight. You plan to shoehorn a 600hp engine into that there little pocket rocket?  :jaw:

Is it still a Wankel?

Surely you'll twist the chassis (well, you know.... Body)  first blip of the throttle!?!? gonna need some mighty strong strengthening isn't it?

Well, should make for a good project log as Eric said  :poke:    :)

Looks good in the vid.... Or more accurately sounds good!

Looking forward to seeing what you do with the engine

Thanks guys!

Here are a couple pics before I took it apart.

Fuel Injected, dry sump. flywheel and counterweights, and entire clutch and pressure plate assy 11 pounds.

6 barrel throttle body, and 6 runners. Its a full bridgeport engine, with full Mazda Factory Race size peripheral ports as well.
Exhaust are 2.6" diameter each.

Top Mount Starter. Worked well with the hewland transaxle it was attached to.

Progressive throttle body linkage visible here..

Dry sump pump visible here..
It was made using (I believe) Volkswagon gearotor pumps.. I believe from a bug possibly?
Runs at 120 PSI.
