Another race car...
« on: April 24, 2012, 01:19:17 PM »
This is the BMW-powered Ford Crapi sorry Capri  that I made the sump for:

Please excuse the general tattyness... it was deemed more important to get the mechanicals right than the bodywork; that will be fixed up hopefully next month.

Things We've Fixed:
 - Gear stick (many adjustments, I will share some pictures next week)
 - Steering rack mounts (you've already seen those, they work)
 - Throttle pedal - was coming on with the brake; the throttle pedal was cut and a "U" shaped section welded in to avoid the brake balance bar, which was the culprit
 - Flexi-pipes installed between master cyls and reservoirs for brake & clutch - the old fixed ones were a right dog to work around

Things Still to Fix:
 - Mystery oil leak around the oil filter (not sure where it is...)
 - The bonnet (the one on it is cream crackered)
 - Shockingly bad bodywork & paint
 - Lack of sponsorship...

Racing at Croft (near Darlington, Co. Durham) this weekend, any locals are welcome to come and say Hi - look for a large Bedford coach in a similar paint job...
Cheers!
Ade.

Hi
Ade
The Capri looks very purposefully
I bet you have a better finish on the inlet ports than the bodywork :) :) :) :) :)
People used to take the piss out of our cars until they were blown away by them
A wet croft
My previous employer held the outright lap record at croft for many years
Until a up and coming driver (Jim Crawford) took 2 seconds out of it at the last meeting before it closed
I have not been back since the place was revamped

Over here, we didn't have a Ford Capri.

We did have 3 generations of a Mercury Capri. Gen 1 looked similar to what you are showing... Gen 2 was a Mustang and Gen 3 was a little Mazda looking thing.

Either way... cool race car. Who cares what it looks like as long as it does the business!

my god I LOVE it..

My brother had a Capri back in the... I spose early 80s? And it was that exact body style. I believe he had a V6 in it.

I do love that body style. They are ultra rare here in the states. I always thought those were Escorts over in England...

Cool Car!

Well, I've been waiting for some updates...  :poke:

When you get to Oulton park make sure you give me some notice.... I might be able to make that one  :headbang:
(not putting mine on there though, not track ready... Me or the car!)

Capri bonnets... I know a few lads with Capris. I could ask around. They won't have the vent on though!

No pictures yet, but I won my class!!! OK, there were only 2 of us in it.... but I'm still chuffed to bits, it was a genuine on-track overtake as well... The weather was absolutely soaking wet, which is what made the different I think.

I'll get some pix sorted out soon, especially the one you're waiting for Ralph.
Cheers!

Dave (Steamer) - sorry, didn't make it clear I was pulling your leg.  The driver, Mr Colin Vickers, is Ade's Dad - and I was just making a joke out of the "big bad dude" comment.....

Gonna have to disappoint with the photos I'm afraid - there are no pix of me in the rain (it was too wet to allow the camera out, besides I think Dad's a bit afraid of it (the camera, that is).

Since that last oh-so-optimistic post, we have:

1) Fixed a faulty damper.

2) Attached the dampers to the front of the car(!!) - the bolts holding the dampers to the wheel hubs on both sides had gone missing. No wonder the damn thing wouldn't turn in!

3) Made new compression struts (9" long); one had stripped its threads, the other was a PITA to adjust. Both struts now have a 5/8" UNF LH thread on one end, and RH thread on the other; so when you turn them clockwise, they extend (both threads undo), and vice versa. Crafty... fortunately RDG tools had reasonably priced taps & dies.

4) Made new steering rack extensions, so the track rods actually reach the steering arms on both sides

5) Made steering arm uprights to replace the original ball joints; the rubber gaiter was catching on the brake disc. Now rose jointed.

and finally...

6) Returned the steering arms to their original profile - they had been bent to allow the rubber gaiter on the ball joint to clear the brake disk, which had ruined the Ackerman steering angles.

Current project, making a new alternator bracket; at my last qualifying session, the alternator adjustment bracket sheared & one of the mounting bolts sheared, so the alternator moved & loosened the fanbelt, causing the engine to boil. Fixed it for the race, and it lasted into Dad's next practice, then broke again just prior to the race...

There will be some pix of the bits I've made soon.
Cheers!

Very nice Mr Drillin - rectangular headlights... I thought the Mk1 had 4 round lights, like the Mk3? Maybe I'm wrong... I know the Mk2 had square lights (like yours), I had a Mk2 ex BTCC for a while, although that had been modified to take round lights.

Recently, I've made a few bits for the car....:

Blue arrow: A compression strut. 5/8" UNF threaded holes at either end, the nearside end is LH thread, so turning the bar clockwise or anti-clockwise lengthens or shortens it by screwing both ends in or out... The pale blue arrow points at the LH threaded end piece, which I also had to make.

The green arrow points at an extension to the steering rack arms (track rods). They've already been extended once by being cut & welded; I figured a bit of extra length with adjustment was needed this time. Besides, the rose joint is threaded M10, whereas the track rod is 9/16" UNF... so the extension bar is threaded with both. Both RH threads this time, so to extend the arm one turns the track rod, unscrewing it from the extension & hence lengthening it.

Finally, the yellow arrow points at the new steering pivot, replacing the old ball joint, which would catch on the brake disk if fitted. A closer view:

Top & bottom are threaded M10. The rose joint through shaft is 10mm; it buts up to a shoulder that you can't see in the picture; the pin is 13mm above the shoulder, tapering to 11.5mm to go through the steering arm, before going back to M10. Not terribly difficult to make, the taper was the only critical bit, so it seats firmly in the steering arm.

Finally:

The sump you've seen before, somewhere.... the blocks that hold the steering rack in place are my doing. Nice & chunky to take the forces...
Cheers!

Yer right...... Yer wrong....... An original, 1969 model.

I think the ones with bigger engines had twin round lamps. Maybe I'm wrong......

Nice pushin an pullin parts!

Weren't the round headlights fitted in the Mk1 facelift model? They put the indicators in the front bumper to make room for them IIRC.

Remember the mark 1 coming out, twin head lights were GT or GLX? usually 3ltr Essex.
Now if i could find an RS3100!

Nice rose joints, i did everything on mine bar use them, didnt like the cost.
That would have sorted most of the handling out, adjustable track control arms something else i didnt like the cost of so used Escort standard and cut a v out then cast welded back up.

Bet that Capri handles, also nice and light.

I know a guy who owns 2 of them.... Now oddly the RS 2.8 being rarer, they fetch more cash.... Got 20+ grand??  :bugeye:

You can get some quite nice Brooklands or Tickfords for good money  :headbang:

Painful & depressing day, Saturday...

The above is the result of being tipped into the pit wall off the start line, I'd only gone 100yds in the first of 2 races....  :bang:

The car will be re-born.... we were going to build a chassis from the ground up, but it looks like we might be able to buy one ready-made, with just modifications required to mount the various components.... so, the car should be back next year, and even faster than this year...

The driver (me  :palm:) escaped with a bit of a headache and a bruised rib, which is bloddy painful.
Cheers!

Car, reborn? Good! Another opportunity to improve things.......

Looking forward to the entertainment! :proj:
