Hi from beautiful Ulladulla, NSW, Australia
« on: May 16, 2012, 04:26:38 AM »
Greetings all,
I stumbled upon this site while looking for something else - looks really good!

Anyway, I did a 5yr fitter and turner apprenticeship in HM Dockyard, Portsmouth, England. Worked on aircraft carriers, submarines, cruisers etc.
Decided there were better things to do and joined the merchant navy as an engineer for 7 years, saw the world, great times!

Also went back in the Dockyard as an engine fitter in between shipping companies - went to sea on an aircraft carrier when she was undergoing trials - great experience when they rang for emergency full ahead and she ploughed through the ocean flat out!

Then worked for IBM as a senior toolroom technician in their Havant, Hampshire factory until I emigrated to the great land of Oz!

Worked for IBM in Sydney as an office products field engineer, then moved to Canberra to get into the IT industry - as a field engineer for Wang Computer, then moved to Data 100, then Memorex, then to Storage Technology as a Senior Customer Engineer, Tech Support Engineer and lastly, Regional Engineering Manager.
Then left StorageTek and changed to Tech Writing, (writing and editing maintenance manuals for the Oz army), we used to hoon around in all the army motorised hardware (tanks, armoured vehicles etc) so we could make sure that the manuals accurately reflected actual practice, LOL...  :ddb:

Moving on... then I worked for the Oz Guvmint as an IT Tech Writer - all sorts of tech manuals, policy documents etc. Nice job, I enjoyed it. Then retired and recently moved to the South Coast of NSW. Currently setting my (small) shed up as a workshop. Got my X2 mill set up there (I CNC'd it a few years ago) and now working on my lathe - just fitted a VFD and 3PH motor, have to make a control panel and then I can install that in my shed too. Future project is to CNC the lathe too.

I'm into radio controlled model warship combat - check out our web site: www.ausbg.org - loads of fun! :bugeye:
Also recently got into model airplanes too. Never a dull moment, I just enjoy fiddling with stuff!  :dremel:

So, that's me...

Cheers,
Dave.
Cheers,
Dave (Yes, another one. I'm sure we're being cloned somewhere)

Welcome to MadModder. Looks like you have had a wealth of experience judging by your work history. It doesn't look like you had any time to have a dull moment. I am glad that you stumbled across the site and stopped to join. We look forward to your participation in the forum.

I checked out your link to the boat club. You look like you have something pretty good going there. I myself have done R/C aircraft, cars and boats but not ships and certainly not shooting at them.  :D :D

Cheers

Hi Don,
Here's a pic of my previous (around 6 foot long) battleship (FNS Richelieu) shortly before she sank at a last man standing battle we had. It was a no holds barred slugfest with broadsides at point blank range. She had 8 x 1/4" barrels in the bow and 3 x 3/16" barrels in the stern. The bow turrets could rotate and barrels depress (no elevation allowed above horizontal for safety reasons).
Cannons are powered with compressed CO2 and have autoloading magazines holding heaps (I forget how many) of ball bearings.
The water you see pouring out of the starboard side is from the on board bilge pump, it's there to simulate damage control, it struggled manfully but the lower she sank the more water poured in through previously uncovered holes.
All our ships are to 1/144 scale including speed, armament and armour as near as we can replicate. We don't go in for detailed superstructures, for obvious reasons  :hammer:

P.S. Not sure if you'll be able to see the pic, I seemingly attached it OK but I couldn't see it in the preview...

Hello and welcome,
No need for me to visit the ausbg site. Already been there (several times) and am already familiar with the Richelieu. At least I am if it is the same one from the videos on the website. A pleasure to have one of you gentlemen here. Hope you enjoy it here.
