Finally I can start on my workshop, it has been a long time coming and I had to get my digger to a point where it could do the ground work including burying some rather large bits of concrete dumped on the garden when I got john wayne and his crew in to do my parking place (long story that still makes me seethe needless to say I expect them to appear on rogue traders any time now).
Unfortunatly I neglected to take a before picture but I got the concrete blocks buried and the ground pretty level and the shuttering is in place just need to spend a little time leveling the ground inside it, preparing the reinforcing steels etc and I will be ready to pour the base maybe next weekend or the weekend after.

The plan is to use 45mm composit cladding for the walls and roof of my 6 metre by 3 metre workshop held in place by a basic framework. This will mean that no more insulation should be required.
This is going to take a while as money is going to be a problem I had enough saved until our poor cat took ill and had to have some attention from the vet, still ended up having to put him down the poor little sod

but a few weeks of belt tightening and hopefully I will have enough to proceed.

never trust maths and guess work, actually make that never trust MY maths and guess work.
I worked out that the slab for my shop would be approximatly 1.8 cubic metres then I guessed there is about 1 cubic metre of sand and gravel in a jumbo bag of ballast so 2 bags by the time you add cement and water should be plenty.
It barely covered half of my slab so will have to get more next week.
I did cobble together a rather neat bucket for my digger though to save having to barrow the stuff from mixer to ground

sorry for the bad pics light was fading when i decided to take them.
now it going to be a long wait for funds to get the composit panels

but at least I will have the slab there to encourage me to save.

no i dont mind the door plaque is going to need repainting it should say "fairy cottage" but it has been kicking around the garden for ages and i just put it there on a whim.
gonna tell the grandaughter that it is solid until the fairies use it

see how long she can keep quiet waiting for them to appear

bastard, reminds me of the time I gave my daughter a stick welding rod and told her it as a sparkler, stood for hours in front of the bonfire trying to light it.

Shipto, when I did my slab 5.3mx3.6 it took 3.5 cubic metres of readymix. your maths is right, ish. 6x3 =18m3. Then the depth if 50cm=/2 10cm(4inches) =/10. My slab was 6 inches deep more or less. Did the same as you with the polly membrane hardcore and reinforcing.

Have to say I cheated and got a company in. Freebarrow where they come and mix what you need and barrow it in for free.
Worked out cost of hiring a mixer and the raw materials, not to mention the backbreaking labour and they were still cheaper.

Did it in one pour, just leaving me to shutter it flat. Only word of advise for later is keep the roof under 2.8-3.0m to keep the planners happy, also 5.5m from the main dwelling.

Thanks Pete distance from house is not a problem it is at least 12 metres away I am planning on 2.3 metres to eaves and then 3 metres to apex. from what I have read on the planning portal your allowed 2.5 to eaves and a maximum of 4 metres for dual pitched roof (which I assume is /\ style) and 3 metres for any other type of roof, but as I dont need 4 metres i will stick to 3.

Boy did that few weeks stretch out, to be fair i had enough a while ago but with the weather There was no point buying the panels to sit there and soak up the water.
Anyway finally ordered them and fingers crossed they will be here for this weekend, so if i get lucky with the weather I can buy the timber needed this weekend and finally get to work

bloody fuming who would have thought that you would have to chase people to sell you stuff?
The people I planned to buy the panels from have given me the run around so no panels yet looking around for somewhere else to sell them to me.
might be just as well though judging by the weather forcasts.

So the only place I found the composite panels at a reasonable price f**ked me about so much that I decided to ditch them and ordered single skin profile panels instead, along with many lengths of timber. The timber will be here saturday morning and the panels some time next week. I also have a slightly different plan from the "final design" posted above in which I move the double doors to the end where the parking is and add a single door for general use.
So in short I will hopefully (need a fingers crossed emoticon), weather permitting be posting to this thread again and in due course I will be able to complete the part finished projects I have lying around at work

I have a roof (of sorts) spent yesterday and a few hours of today fixing the roof ridges (is that right? not up on building terminology) the rest of the day was spent putting the plastic moisture barrier on and a few batons.
Tomorrow I can fix the rest of the batons and hopefully fire up the plasma cutter for the steel panels.

Spent today putting the rest of the batons and the roof panels on even got time to put a few side panels on but they are not visible in the picture as they are on the back right hand side.
the roof still needs some more screws to hold it down but I am trying to get as many panels done as possible because the plasma cutter will have to go back to work on tuesday.
the idea was to cut the left hand side of the roof panels back after they where secure but i may leave them as they are and add some supports, they will help keep the rain of things i am going to need to store outside.

It certainly is, I was back at work today but left wife and son to clear the garden a little so I could move the digger out of the way which allowed me to take a better picture.
I just thought too this weekend I am going to have a use for my unfinished (as in never got round to painting it

) treadle hammer which I have never shown on this forum, if I am not too shattered after work tomorrow I will drag it out to show you guys.

Heres the hammer in all its rusty glory, I calculated the block of steel weights about 21kg,
second 2 pics show a before and after pic on a scrap of the tin cladding.
Needs its joints oiling as its a little lethargic in its movement.

Another weekend of work and window are in, doors are on and its secure now

,no more having to move all my tools back into the house every night. Armoured cable is now ordered, so need to dig the trench to lay it now.
Had a slight problem with the roof, I have as I have grown older gained a fear of heights and when I was securing the panels on the left side the ladder wobbled a little and I couldnt get back up it so I figured we havent had bad winds for a while it should be ok until weekend when mate can do it for me. Thursday wife calls me "get home roof is moving" end panel had flipped over

luckily the damage was not much and will be covered when i put the ridges on.

Gonna get me some big ass blinds to solve that problem. To be honest I am more worried about little oiks throwing rocks at the windows, I will have to mull that over for a solution.

Nice looking shop; if you can afford it how about fitting some Poly carb' / acetate sheeting over your windows for protection, or, some heavy gauge fencing wire (50mm square mesh) framed up & fitted

Thanks guys and mech I was thinking the exact same thing today except I might use 25mm mesh rather than 50mm. Only have to worry about the side with door as the other window faces house and cant be got from path.

wet weekend so couldnt finish the stuff I need to do outside but got some lights wired up only simple bulbs with the wire that will go into consumer unit fitted to a plug at the moment but will replace them with strip lights in due course.
Funds are depleting quite quickly so I am concentrating on the stuff I can afford to do for a while.
got a workbench built and a cheapy alarm in too, alarm was only 8 quid from aldi.
armoured cable didnt turn up this week so hopefully will get that for next week along with the consumer unit and wire for the plug sockets.

& sit on my fold up bar stool, then I ask mesel' now what was I going to do

the old grey matter is decidedly slower these days

pity I had to give up the pipe otherwise that would have been stoked & lit too

No pics today (what do you all wanna see a big ugly trench for?) just a update, mains cable is buried and in place ready for the electician with his nice part P certificates to connect it all up, hopefully next week but maybe a bit later will have to see what he wants to charge first. it might be a good idea to finish the insulation and plasterboarding first

yay bikes finally gone can get on with the build now, hopefully order the insulation and plasterboard for the walls next week which will allow me to get the electrics sorted out, will leave the roof insulation for a later time.

actually thats not really true no money changed hands but he gave me a router, a really nice right angle clamp and a 110v bosch drill, he even offered me a cheapo drill press which I refused at the time but may actually take it of him since I dont have one yet.

Hang curtains or something to cover up the windows when your not there. What they can't see they are not going to worry about.
Believe me, it's sickening to get up and find all your tools gone.
Make the whole thing as inconspicuous as possible.

Electric is connected

although need to remember to call the guy he meant to change the 32 amp breaker for a 20 amp (to run my welder) and instead swapped the 16 amp for a 32 amp

changed the silly little 1/6 hp motor on the piller drill mate gave me for a 1/4 its not pretty but it does the job and hopefully I wont need it for long, at least now I can drill a hole without having to book it 3 hours in advance
