I've just had an E-Mail from Karen( Pete's wife) to say that he has just had a heart attack.

It is too early to give details but our thoughts and best wishes go out to him( and Karen) for a speedy recovery

Had a note from Pete- he's on the mend.

Many thanks for your thoughts. Yes I did have a couple of heart attacks in the last week. I have had a stent inserted. While there is permanent damage, I just may have been a bit lucky it wasn't far worse. After 46 years as a heavy smoker, I have no one to blame but myself. So far I'm feeling better than I have in months.

Yes and they weren't too gentle about telling me what would soon happen if I didn't. I wouldn't wish the experience on anyone. So for anyone who still smokes here? Well I don't need to say anymore.

I'm glad to hear that you are getting a chance to quit smoking and living to tell about it. All too many people don't get that chance. For as long as you live there will be times that you crave a cigarette. Don't give in because if you do it will just be the first one before the second one before the third one etc. You might not get the second chance. Chew on a candy, gum or a pencil, anything that keeps your mouth busy. Playing with a pencil in your hand helps as well.

I talk from experience having quit 3 times. My problem wasn't my heart but my lungs. COPD which leaves me tied up to an oxygen tank 24/7. Now i know what a dog feels like being tied up all the time.

I hope that you come thru this feeling better than ever and with proper exercise and rest make chip fly like they never have before.

Remember, keep your stick on the ice, I'm pulling for you.

It took me a couple of goes to quit, nicotine patches helped me immensely. I've been off them for about 4 or 5 years now (I forget when I quit, exactly). Fortunately, I think I quit before any major damage was done (despite smoking for 18 years), at least when I was hospitalised for Pneumonia last year, I got an "other than that" clean bill of health.

The biggest problem I've got now is weight control. I was always about 17.5-18st from age 18 to 30ish, since I quit I've drifted up to nearly 21st. So now I have to do something about that, and unfortunately it's going to be hard work & eating rabbit food

Many thanks for the tips. So far the Habitrol patches I'm on have removed any craving. I'm still reaching for a cigarette out of habit if I don't think about it even though I'm not wanting one. I'm more than a little bit impressed with how well there working. The morning coffee is a bit tough at times though. No worrys though, I won't be smoking again.

Glad to hear you are doing better!, As for quitting smoking, I did it about 9 years ago. I still reach for the pack every one in the while and think about having Just one almost every day, some days more than one!  I will add what helped me and still helps on occasions is Mint snuff pouches.
They have a quit smoking program too.
Mint snuff pouches it is a great breathe mint and way to keep the mouth watered with out chewing like a cow with gum!

They also have useful packaging when empty.

Labels removed and painted with that Krylon plastics paint

Keeps all of the little bits under control in the RC gas box. The bottle isn't upside down  !

I don't think the desire ever entirely leaves an ex-smoker. My late mother came from Preston (UK), where a festival called the Preston Guild takes place once every 20 years. 2012 was a Guild year. After the 1952 event, Mother gave up, declaring that she wouldn't smoke again until next Preston Guild. In 1972, I caught sight of a packet of cigs in her handbag. I didn't mention it, and though she may have secretly tried one for old times' sake, she didn't take the habit up again.

Next Preston Guild will be 2032, if any smokers on here are young enough to make a similar resolution.
