hello from calgary alberta
« on: September 16, 2012, 03:48:42 AM »

Hello all I have never played with steam before but my dad worked at the dockyard for 34 years and wanted to build a steamer for the inner harbour in victoria bc. He passed at 86 and I want to try to finish it for him. He had the cylinder head cast in two parts it has a 1. 5 " high presure and a 3" low presure bore with a 2.5" stroke measured between the ports with a total bore depth of 3.5". The low exhausts on the right and the high exhausts on the left. I will be going back out there to bring back his lathe and shaper within the month and now that I have a idea what to look for see if he made any more parts. I have done some lathework (a southbend) and milling but have never ran a shaper and am looking forward to the challenge. I would also like to thank saw and doubleboost and anyone else who posts the stages of their build it has really helped wrap my head around the construction and workings of these engines!

I have his notes and some drawings but wasn't sure what model it is but today I came across a stuart 6a that looks like it is the same one what do you think?

Hi and welcome.
It is impossible to say whether this is a Stuart 6, because the picture is too large and it is impossible to get an accurate overview.  :zap:
Looking at the drawing it looks like it. Good luck with the building.  :nrocks:

:beer: Well that worked a lot better using that program thanks.
So now you can see the head my dad had cast I have no idea why it is made in two halves, anyways I have been figuring out how the 6a  is put together by looking at all the pics I am still puzzled about how the conrod connects to the piston rod it appears that the rod is closer to the slide and the wrist pin runs beside it. I would think that would cause a shear effect on the brass slide but I'm a long way from doing that! I will have to start finishing off the head once the steam chests are on it I can figure out how long the crank has to be i,ve figured out  the stroke assuming the piston dose not go over the ports. That will give me time to see if I can find some plans, the stuart site says that they just moved and the master plans are locked in the vault and to try back near the end of the year.

Tom
Bill

Hi and welcome to MadModder.

Tom, those photos work much better at the new size. We look forward to following along with your build as you progress.

Bill. Is "Okotoks" in Alberta? I'm just not that great on my Canadian geography knowledge for towns and cities. Perhaps you could start a new post in "Introductions" and tell us a bit about yourself.

We look forward to the participation of both of you in the forums.

Cheers
