Green sand moulds for cast iron muffler
« on: September 27, 2012, 11:47:54 PM »
I made this video for anyone that is curious about how a sand mould is made for pouring molten metal into. In the first mould I use a reinforcing rod to stop the fragile greensand core from breaking. In the second mould I forgot to drill a hole for the draw spike and show a different way to extract the pattern from the sand mould. The third mould shows the normal way to extract a pattern from a sand mould. The castings were for a muffler for a 3hp Fairbanks morse engine that belongs to a friend.

Very interesting, looks like many years of experience there, you make it look so easy, thanks for sharing.

Tell us a bit about your sand muller - is it a home brew?

It is a rough copy of a mixer I saw in a museum in Germany a long tme ago, so simple to make and works so well. When I first ran a cupola I thought there must be a better way of mixing large amounts of sand and this mixer is exactly what I needed.

Click onto this link and you can see all the parts of my sand mixer, a video is always better than photos.

Excellent! I've not re-established my foundry since I moved here a while back (*), but I'm getting close! I was floor mixing but that seems a far superior way forward

* the non inflamable building went up a year ago but was annexed for temporary storage almost imediately :(
