Imminent, American East Coast Storm........
« on: October 29, 2012, 04:52:02 PM »
Eric, Victoria and family.

Just to say, we're thinking of you, and all others, in the path of the storm.

Hope all is well, on the other side........

Thanks guys... It is aiming right for us. Pretty scary out right now. The wind is ripping down my street. Had some brown outs, but we still have power.

Fingers crossed.

Hi John

It pretty much is. We are doing OK but other parts of the state are being devastated. We lost power for about 2 hours... just got it back. The worst is still yet to come. The wind noise is terrible. Sounds like the house is being ripped apart. Got a large tree that keeps scrapping the house. Is a little worrying as it is so close to our power lines.

What amazes me is they have played down this storm compared to the way they normally report and pre-report storms. We are around 700/800 miles top the east and the winds are blowing steady 30/35 miles an hour with Gusts a long the west shore of lake Huron from 70 mph to 40 plus locally. I just was standing at the patio doors in the kitchen. The sky was flashing blue white like it was lightening, went out side and it was the flash of numerous power transformers giving their lives to Mother Nature. Our power has been off a couple times over night/yesterday.

They weren't kidding when they said it will have an impact on every state east of the Mississippi River. We had some snow flakes mixed with the driving sideways rain, West Va. got a foot of snow yesterday/overnight. Virgina had a hurricane on the East side of the state and blizzard conditions on the West side! in the 70's I was in West Virgina and they got 27"s of snow in 8 hours in the mountains.

I'm glad that as of last report Eric and family are doing good considering their location. 7½ million people currently with out power along the states affected on the coast. I'm glad I refilled the two empty gas cans just in case, so I have about 60 gallons with the truck, generator and cans. Last time there was a major outage it was 5 days.

Well the power just went off, for a minute or so. Got top love them UPS!
Hope your conditions steadily improve Eric

The fire was in a section of Rockaway called Breezy Point, 50 + houses. leveled it is on an island and was 4-5 feet under water. No way to get to it and the houses are very close together. They also mentioned  there was another big one in a New Jersey city were everything was deep in the water so it was possible to fight them.

Hey guys...

Family is safe and sound. Still assessing the damage. Last night was pretty scary. A huge tree went down... fortunately for us, the wind had changed direction and took it one way instead of into mine and my neighbors house.

More updates later...

Not me. I am closer to Atlantic City... which is where I think the hurricane mad land fall.

Will have more info later. Trying to work remotely. We had to shut one of our data centers in NYC down last night. Have to bring it back on line this morning.

Transportation is hosed... I can't even get to the train station. Trains aren't even running anyway.

Will have more later.

Hi there, all in Sandy's path, ahead and astern,

It all sounds horrible, no words to describe it.

But I'm thinking of you and hoping/praying for minimum casualties, injuries and loss.

I was on my boat during the storm and had a few busy days befor it to prepare Tiki and some others here to get through it. Turned out that only myself and one other person stuck with our boats and the rest bugged out to higher ground. it was a bit noisy during the night and we went out to check on the other boats in the water to make sure they stayed putt in their lines. Only a few boats got some minor damage here. Mostly ripped bimini's and stuff lke that. This morning there were cormorants fishing in the parking lot and even this tide is still way high, but I think we got away with it quite well considering the size and force of the storm. It does not look to good in some other areas. Just hope that not to many people get hurt during this storm and flooding.

All back to normal now here even though the temps have dropped a bit. At least we have proper tides back and water is going up and down and not just up and higher. Went out to collect some fish of the car park this morning. So all is well here now.

Hope everybody there is fine after Sandy.

On the news looks like there is going to some serious cleaning and rebuilding to do. News show mainly damaged buildings and structures, but I haven't seen much talk about infrastructure, I hope it fared well.

Nope the gas piping on those barrier islands is shot along with any of the wires electric, phone and cable systems. most of the board walks are reduced to just the steel/concrete supports the boards are gone, but that is the way they design them. natural gas hangs heavy in the air from the broken piping at the house connections not to mention the ruptures and the burning sands, dirt and water they are showing better to burn it off till it can be turned off.

They really won't be talking about it till the people start screaming the longer it takes to get power back on. They showed a Starbucks in New York city that still had the WIFI operating it was closed but they were lined up agaisnt the glass to get a signal.  :dremel:

It will be a couple weeks for the subway/rail and tunnel system to be back up and running with all the salt water that was in them. two bores of one tunnel have 84 million gals of water in them.

It will be a miracle, if it by Christmas that it is starting to return to normal. The poor people who lost houses etc. are just screwed till they get a check and it clears. A lot of the smaller insurance companies will fold with out paying a dime.

My co-worker lives in Hoboken.  A lot of the town has no power... but the people who do have been putting extension cords with powerstrips outside so those without power can charge their phones and stuff.

They showed a bunch of people at a bank sitting on the floor around a bunch of power strips charging phones etc. on ABC news tonight. Glad you and yours made it through it as it sure looks to be the end of the world for some of the locals.
We still are getting rain/drizzle and cloud cover, the winds have finally died down and no more gusting. That was one big A$$ storm for a cat 1

Yesterday, I was watching the Limey TV about the damage especially in New York and Queens which I have visited. The American commentator remarked that flattened Queens was probably like London or Dresden.

I'm from that generation and it really struck home of how people are going to cope with these problems. I'd sort of forgotten that it isn't just a brief mention and then the media goes away on something or other of 'what they consider important'

We had a series of floods recently- not as severe as yours but people died- I knew one's family.
One of my other friends- a single lady of over 70( who had been with us in Queens) had lost everything except her laptop in our floods.
She still has not been able to return 'home'
One can only hope that your people will not be forgotten. History seems to suggest that they will be.

I would like to wrong- but?

You have got to be joking! If anything, supplies and personnel from the marathon should be sent to help the rescue and clean-up efforts from Sandy. Maybe even cancel or postpone the marathon.

Stuff like that raises my blood pressure.

That's the idiot newspeople, not letting facts get in the way of a good story! the equipment for the marathon was more than likely order for rental months ago, by the committee that puts it together. Now Bloomberg is just another lucky stupid rich guy. That thinks all of the sheeple should follow blindly what he says.

Now the looting, and other real problems parts of that area are having aren't getting much press. Because they don't want the general populace screaming for martial law, along with the shoot to kill looter orders yet, But it will be coming. you would thing that the gas stations would have generators after the last big one that hit last year.

They will have to make it a state law like FLA. has about the gas stations all have to have generators to operate the gas pumps!

DON"T believe what the talking head bimbo's and bumbo's are spouting. As my first year TV and Radio journalism instructor said in the early 70's NEVER LET THE TRUTH, GET IN THE WAY OF A GOOD STORY!

He is getting as bad as our head up his A$$ VP that shoots from the lip with out taking aim first.

The clean up from Sandy is still in full swing and loads of folks without electrickery and now we are having a nor easter coming in with snow and rain. I am ok as I live on my boat and don't have any issues with power outages but I am thinking about those poor folks that don't have heating and the only running water they have is flowing through their basement.
