Split die screw point angle
« on: December 06, 2012, 05:56:15 PM »
I have a split die, M12x1.75, and need to make a holder for it to be able to use it. The conical screw, which keeps the die open, what angle should the point have?

Goran, I made a tailstock die holder for my lathe with the "die expander" screws 60 degrees included angle. I copied that from the screw in an old Presto die stock, which looked about 60 degrees, and used silver steel/drill rod and hardened it afterwards, to make it last a bit longer when used to expand HSS dies.

I don't think the exact angle is very important.

I've cut the end off it twice, but it's still too short
